If restarting doesn't work try inserting a paperclip in the small hole on front of the drive to eject the disc.

Did you hold "Eject" button while restarting?
Right click on CD drive in "My computer", click "Eject". |

It sounds like the opening gear has either stuck or is disengaged.
On the older drives like that the opening mechanism would wear down and sometimes it would open and most of the time it would do just like you are stating. How old is the system? Is it a name brand and if so what make and model? If you don't know what about the cdrom drive? How old is it and what is the make and model of it? |

Is this it HERE
If so you should be able to replace the drive with a newer dvd\cdrw drive for about 40 dollars with shipping. |

I see no reason you can't put the dvd\cdrw drive in.
It's as simple as disconnecting the cable and power from existing drive and taking it out of the system. Then putting new drive in and connecting the data ribbon and power to it. You need to make sure you get the correct type of drive replacement. I suggest if the system is not under warranty then open it up and look at the connections on the back of the cd drive. Is there a wide grey ribbon going to it and a 3 or 4 wire connection? This would indicate a Ide data ribbon and standard power connection. If so then what you would need to get is a IDE drive. From there we can assist in the installation. |

The flip open drives have a little hole. Usually they are to the right of center.
I have an old drive that I am looking at. The hole is the size of a paper clip. |
