Can I mix SATA and Ide?

I am looking to install a new DVD drive in my desktop machine.

Currently all my drives are IDE type, but since the most modern standard seems to be SATA (and my motherboard supports this) I am thinking about buying a SATA DVD.

But, can I mix the two standards successfully?
