Last week, our phone line and Verizon DSL internet connection were interrupted during a rainstorm. We have two desktop computers. We have a D-Link Router and DSL modem attached to Computer No. 1 (Host). Computer No. 2 (Client) receives wireless internet connection from the D-Link Router attached to the Host Computer. The Host and Client both use Internet Explorer 6.0, and the Client also has Firefox. Both computers run Windows XP 5.1.
When the phone line and internet connection were restored, neither computer was able to access their Internet Home Pages which were both set to Yahoo.com. Moreover, neither computer could access Microsoft.com and many other websites, whether through IE or Firefox. Whenever we attempt to go to Yahoo.com or Microsoft.com we are repeatedly timed out with a "DNS Error." However, both computers are able to search the internet by using Google and we can connect to about 75% of the sites that we utilize--but again, no Microsoft.com or Yahoo.com among many others. Additionally, some Java applications work while others do not. As novices, our first reaction, of course, was to assume that our computers were infected by a virus or spyware. After running EVERY Geeks to Go recommended virus and spyware scan, this does not appear to be the problem. I have searched for other posts to see if anyone had similar problems. After reading various posts, I'm now inclined to believe that perhaps the D-Link Router settings were disturbed during the outage and are now preventing us from having full access to internet sites. However, a third-party originally connected the D-Link Router so we're not certain where to start. Does this amateur diagnosis make sense? Any comments as to why we can't connect to Microsoft.com, Yahoo.com etc. and why certain Java applications are not working? Thank you in advance.
