OS: windows xp

I can access the web fine but when I get to any site that is secure (https) I only get a connection error. I have tried dial-a-fix, tried winsox xp fix and everything else I could think of. I don't know what to do now. I have tried uninstalling everything I can think of that I have installed lately but no luck. I do notice that in the task bar in the lower rt corner there no longer is a volume icon or safely remove hardware icon. Don't know if that has anything to do with my problem or not. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.
