Thank god I found this site!
NAV warns me that I have Trojan.Vundo, but it can't remove it. Ran full scan in both normal and safe modes, but cannot repair, quarantine nor delete the file (c:\windows\system32\tuvtr.dll). Tried Norton's removal tool but it doesn't even find the problem. Followed all of Norton's advice on their site - none of the registry keys they tell me to delete are there. Norton tech emailed me back today and followed those instructions as well, still no luck. By chance, Windows automatic update started today including some 'new' security measures, but no change to my system. Windows is as up to date as I can get it. Winfixer pops up every now and then, but I can't find the program on my system so I don't think it installed completely - but who am I to know for sure? Followed the instructions on your site, step by step. Some of the programs found other spyware, but nothing is getting rid of this one. My system is running VERRRRY slow since this all started - takes at least 10 minutes to reboot, and opening any program/app takes much longer than it should. I turned off system restore per NAV's instructions - have not turned it back on. Here's my HiJackThis logfile - please help me solve this headache! THANK YOU in advance for your help and guidance. PS: if anyone knows the kid who wrote this particular spyware, can you kick him in @ss for me? Loophole,
Thanks for the instructions. Before I start I just want to clarify something. When I reboot before running CleanUp, should I reboot in safe or normal mode? I assume normal if I need to download the program, and later to run an online scan with ActiveScan, but assumptions are what got me into this mess in the first place. Thanks - as soon as I hear back I'll start the process. wanttobeageek |

First of all, let me just say
THANK YOU!!! I seem to finally be rid of the vundo nuisance! Before I post the latest results, just want to mention a couple of things... Nortan emailed me on the weekend to say that their removal tool was updated on Oct. 13. I ran that version and it finally at least detects the presence of Trojan.Vundo, removes/cleans some files but says that one file can only be deleted on reboot. I reboot and the file is still there. At least they're getting closer to fixing their own program, even if they're not there yet. I ran HiJackThis again after using the new removal tool, to make sure there weren't any major changes to my system. The only differences I could see were a new process running ('new' being relative - I may not have disabled the program the last time) c:\windows\system32\BacsTray.exe. There was also a Dell process at R0. Neither seemed significant, so I continued as per your instructions. One of the processes from the previous HiJackThis log was missing when I ran VundoFix: QUOTE O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tuvtr.dll Is this because VundoFix had already killed it from the following instruction? QUOTE At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\system32\tuvtr.dll Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix. I just want to be sure that the bug hasn't masked itself to hide from the cleaning process... All clean, no more Vundo - I hope! I can't find the results of the ActiveScan on my system, so I'll just list what it said at the end of the scan: "No virus or other malicious software have been found!". Where it lists all of the threats it looks for, all are at 0 for both Detected and Disinifected. It's been over a week and I was starting to lose hope. Let me know if it appears to you as well that my system is clean. If so, and now that I'm done, which prevention measures should I continue to use? Let me know if you want me to list what I have here in this thread, or if there's another forum that I should post to. I don't want to have too many programs running in the risk that they might conflict with one another. Cheers |

I' apologize I didnt see you response
QUOTE Nortan emailed me on the weekend to say that their removal tool was updated on Oct. 13. I ran that version and it finally at least detects the presence of Trojan.Vundo, removes/cleans some files but says that one file can only be deleted on reboot. I reboot and the file is still there. I use Norton and I like it. Below is my prevention speech and are all programs recommended. Most spyware scanners won't conflict, But alot of antivirus programs do. so 1 antivirus (norton is fine)one firewall And 2 spyware programs is generally recommended Good luck to you Congratulations your system is clean Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications: Detect and Remove Programs:
AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have. Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs. And also see TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it. |

Again, thank you! Nice to have a 'clean' system again. And thanks for the advice on how to avoid a repeat of this week from [bleep].
