Hi, I recently bought a brand new up to date PC system however after installing my 3 in 1 printer I noticed that I can copy, scan but NOT print.
Everytime I click "print"..for example a test page or a pic or doc, I get a window in the middle of my screen, depicting a printer and a PC and the message saying "SYSTEM ERROR" could not print try turning off computer and try printing again.
So here is what I have done so far...

1. uninstalled and reinstalled hardware and software
2. updated drivers
3. tried to install by way of "plug and play"
4. reconnected the printer to my old system to check the printer still works...it does!
5. tried the USB cable in all 6 USB ports that I have

I even get the printer icon in my task bar and in my Printer and faxes folder saying HP PSC 1200 series ready.

So here are my specs.

Printer
is around 4years old and is a HP psc 1210 all in one.
PC
Windows XP home edition
Intel 64 BIT DualCore 960 Spezial 2x3.4GHz=6.8GHz
ASUS P5N-SLI Sockel 775 DualChannel
2GB DDR2-667MHz Kingston (2x1024MB im DualChannel)
LG-H22 Light Scribe 18fach DVD/CD Brenner
250GB Serial ATA-II 8MB/NCQ 7200U/min flόssigkeitsgelagert
GeForce-7 7950-GT 512MB PCI-Express Leistung
6 x USB 2.0 ports.

The only thing that I can really think of is that the printer maybe only works over 1.1 USB.
Is there such a thing as a 2.0 USB cable that I could buy to make it work or should the printer work anyway regardless of USB cable/port speed?

If you need any more details please do ask...I have to get this sorted...I really need a working printer.

Many many thanks in advance, misterc.

misterc - Let me extend a belated Welcome – to you –

Welcome to – Geeks to Go –

1. uninstalled and reinstalled hardware and software
2. updated drivers
3. tried to install by way of "plug and play"
4. reconnected the printer to my old system to check the printer still works...it does!
5. tried the USB cable in all 6 USB ports that I have

Pretty frustrating – 4 Years ago – HP had problems with USB Installation with M$ - Windows Plug n Play – They just were not able to get on the same page –

I think the main Issue was – The distinction between – Printer Software & Printer Driver – And when was proper time to connect the Printer –

They would walk you thru the whole process – and then there was this note – at the end -

The HP all-in-one software must be installed on the computer before connecting the cable to the all-in-one or the installation may fail.

Install the HP all-in-one software on the computer before connecting the USB cable to the all-in-one or the installation may fail. Windows will detect the all-in-one when the cable is connected. Unless the all-in-one software is already installed on the computer when the all-in-one is connected, Windows will store the wrong device driver information.

And sure enough – It did – Fail –

I am not sure where you stand in this process – but let me ask you a few questions & then I give you some things to try –

(1) I think you can leave the HP Program installed –
(2) I will give you a process to Enhance Device Manager to show the History – Installation Attempts – So we can uninstall/get rid of – the clutter –
(3) Install proper USB Driver
(4) Shut down PC
(5) Connect Printer
(6) Hopefully – PnP finds – New Hardware – And Installs –

We will be working with – Device Manager – a lot – So I will show you how to put – Device Manager Shortcut Icon on your Desktop – For Instant Usage – and a Procedure to Enhance Device Manager -

These procedures will follow at end of this Post -
_______________________________________________________________________

First a few questions for clarification – [Mine]

(1) How many USB Devices do you have for PC - Do they function ok -
(2) Do all your USB Ports function Ok
(3) Do you have any USB HUBS
(4)

after installing my 3 in 1 printer I noticed that I can copy, scan but NOT print.

–
(5) Does this mean that you can – Scan pages from PC & to your PC – Using Scanner Software
(6) Does this mean you can Scan & Copy – using Printer Control – Like a stand-alone Copier would
(7) Does Printer have USB Port & Parallel Port
(8) Does Printer have any Memory Reader or Memory Card Slots or Memory storage
(9) Can Printer print a test page by itself –

Before I forget here is a – HP Support Page for your Printer – HP 1210 is a discontinued printer -

Post back the answers – plus questions/comments on the Procedures –

(3) Right Click DevMan.cmd File & Move Cursor down to – Send to (Create Shortcut)
(4) This will place your DOS Batch File on the Desktop –
(5) Close Windows Explorer –

Now go to Desktop - & Open The New – DevMan – Batch File – Device Manager will appear after a second or two –

Now when you Open Device Manager – Click on View Tab & Click on – Show Hidden Devices – You must show Hidden Devices – each time that you want to view – The Non-Existent Devices – It will not remember/save this setting –

The Non Existent Devices – are good & bad – We will only be interested in Printer – Scanning – Devices for now – You are looking for Devices that have Yellow Warning or Exclamation signs – which indicates faulty installed items – We should be able to clean up your USB problems

Thank you very much for your reply.

A friend of mine found this on the web and I tried it out and it worked.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OPTION 1.
Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Advanced tab
Under Performance select Settings
Select Data Execution Prevention tab
Select "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only."

Reboot and it should work. Worked for me anyway.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OPTION 2.

1. Right-click on My Computer, and select Properties.
2. Click on the Advanced tab.
3. Under Performance, click Settings.
4. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
5. Select the Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select: option.
6. Click Add....
7. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpzeng07.exe and click Open.
8. Click Apply.
9. Click OK, and OK again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't believe it was nothing more than changing ONE setting in the DEP to get it working...I didn't even have to try OPTION 2 listed above but I thought I'd paste it anyway..maybe it could help someone else in the future.

Many many thanks again for your advice and time. Much appreciated, MisterC.
