The problem: about a month ago, I started getting messages from the network admin that my connection was slowed because I was exceeding the daily transfer quota. Now I've been on this same connection for years and have done nothing new lately: I'm not a gamer, don't P2P fileshare, don't even IM. Nothing to account for huge data transfer. I do work from home, but these messages never appear on the weekdays when I'm actually using the computer the most, just on the weekends (and besides my work doesn't require that amount of data transfer).

I called the admin to monitor my traffic and he immediately suspected a trojan. Apparently everything looks normal until every five hours, on schedule, there is some program on my computer taking a massive data dump (pardon the terminology). Aside from those five hours intervals (at the top of the hour) my traffic is normal.

He immediatley suspected WinFixer. I downloaded the Vondo extension from here, but it found nothing. I've run AVG anti-spyware, HijackThis, and AntiSuperSpyware and the logs are below. FileResearchCenter (via AntiSupersyware) found all applications safe, but Panda ActiveScan didn't.

(I did have both Avast! and AVG anti-virus running on my system, and thought maybe there was a conflict so I uninstalled Avast! several days ago before starting all this, keeping AVG.)

Hello jannel and welcome to G2G. Never, ever run two anti-virus programs, EVER!! They do conflict with each other and leave you wide open for infection, plus, AVs take an enormous amount of resources, can you imagine what 2 or more would do a PC!! :) I noticed you had Symantec
at one time, I'll clean their left overs.

AVG may be a free "bare bone" as you call it, but in my opinion and many more like me, it's a great tool that does its job well and uses little system resources. If you feel better to have an AV, not free, then I'd suggest NOD32. Stay away from any Symantec products. :)

Ok, let's get you cleaned up.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O3 - Toolbar: i&Won Co-Pilot - {CA0B9B71-C2AF-11D3-B376-0800460222F0} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\IWON\IWONBAR\3.BIN\IWONBAR.DLL (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {70522FA2-4656-11D5-B0E9-0050DAC24E8F} - http://cc.iwon.com/c..._12_1,0,2,5.exe
O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
O23 - Service: LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling Service (LightScribeService) - Hewlett-Packard Company - C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe
O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

iWon

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\IWON

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

C:\Program Files\Online Services\PeoplePC\ISP5900\Dll\RAS.DLL

After that, Reboot.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Now I want to do a deeper scan:

Download WinPFind3u.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. If, after posting, the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts.

I did everything except I run into problems when it comes to WinPFind.exe. I downloaded it but when I open and try to run scan I get a "No Disk" error message: "Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf9c 4 75b6bf9c." Then I have to shut down the program for "not responding."

Hi jannel, let's try something and see if we can't get winpfind to do it's job. :)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;310405

De-activate all your onboard security, AVG, SuperAntispyware etc.... Try launching Winpfind.

I followed your instructions: turned off System Restore, rebooted, turned it back on again, shut down everything but still when I launched Winpfind got the same error message as before. (I also tried redownloading and installing Winpfind - no luck).

Hi jannel, let's try and run a different tool,

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi-

The Decker system worked, here are the logs. (In the first one, though, it lists programs I've uninstalled from my computer awhile back, like BBC Radio Ripper and NetConceal - does that mean those are still on my computer somewhere?)

it lists programs I've uninstalled from my computer awhile back, like BBC Radio Ripper and NetConceal - does that mean those are still on my computer somewhere?)

Whenever there is a program un-installed, there is always remnants laying around, it's up to you to check Program Files and manually delete the folders.

WildTangent Web Driver

This is optional, unless you're playing AIM games I'd remove it, nothing really bad about this one other then it is installed with out users knowledge. Gathers information about the computer system.
See here and make up your own mind. Plus it's a resource hog.

To remove it:
1) Click on Start| Settings| Control Panel
2) Double-click on Add or Remove Programs
3) Click on the WildTangent selection and Change/Remove, Uninstall, or Add/Remove depending on the operating system. Then follow the onscreen prompts to remove the WT Driver.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O16 - DPF: {70522FA2-4656-11D5-B0E9-0050DAC24E8F} - http://cc.iwon.com/c..._12_1,0,2,5.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Co-Pilot

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\Program Files\NetConceal Anonymizer
C:\Program Files\BBC Radio Ripper
C:\Program Files\iWon
C:\Program Files\WildTangent
< if you decided to un-install it >

I need you to restore an entry I inadvertently deleted with Hijackthis:

To restore the backups:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on "View the list of Backups"
  • Place a check mark next to O23 - Service: LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling Service (LightScribeService) - Hewlett-Packard Company - C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
  • Run HiJackThis and post a new HiJackThis log for review.
I need you to enable hidden files and locate a file to submit for analysis;
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
8. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files

Submit Samples:

You have a file/s of interest to us. It would help the detection rates of the tools we use by getting hold of samples of these infections.

Please download File Submitter by Grinler. I suggest you save the file where it is easy to locate i.e. the root of the drive (C:\submitter.exe).

Create a right-click option:

1. Navigate to this folder in Windows Explorer: C:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo
2. Right-click inside the folder and select New > Shortcut.
3. Enter the location of the item: C:\submitter.exe (or wherever you saved it)
4. Name the shortcut: Submit Malware
5. The select Finish.

Configure the tool:

1. Navigate to the tool in Windows Explorer: C:\submitter.exe (or wherever you saved it)
2. Double-click the file to open it.
3. The put a check in these boxes:

Jotti
VirusTotal
Advanced
BleepingComputer.com

4. Then click Save and OK the confirmation window.
5. Then click Exit to close the tool.

Upload Samples:

1. Locate this file/s in Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wamy.dll

2. For each file you need to right-click and select Send To > Submit Malware (or whatever you named the shortcut)
3. Copy/paste the results of the scans in your next reply. You should have two results for each file scanned.

We are going to work with the registry, so let's make a back up.

Go to Start > Run
Type: regedit Click OK.
On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
Go up to "File | Export". Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
Under "Filename" put backup.

Choose to save it to C:\ or somewhere else safe so that you will remember where you put it (don't put it on the desktop!)
Click save and then go to File | Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

On with the fix;

Open Notepad, and copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixit.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system]
"DisableRegistryTools"=-

Locate fixit.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

Don't forget to post the results of the Hijackthis along with file results. :)

Everything is looking good, but let's run a couple of more scans to make sure all is well as far as malware goes,

Please download the Sophos Anti-Rootkit Scanner and save it to your desktop.

You will need to enter your name, e-mail address and location in order to access the download page.
  • Once you have downloaded the file, double click the sarsfx icon
  • Review the licence agreement and click on the Accept button
  • The scanner will prompt you to extract the files to C:\SOPHTEMP - DO NOT change this location, simply click the Install button
  • Once the files have been extracted; using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\SOPHTEMP and double click on the blue shield icon called sargui
  • Ensure that there are checkmarks next to Running processes, Windows registry and Local hard drives, then click Start scan
  • Allow the program to scan your computer - please be patient as it may take some time
  • Once the scan has completed a window will pop-up with the results of the scan - click OK to this
  • In the main window, you will see each of the entries found by the scan (if any)
    • If the scanner generated any warning messages, please click on each warning and copy and paste the text of it into this thread for me to review
    • Once you have posted any warning messages here, you can close the scanner and wait for me to get back to you
  • If you have not had any warnings, any entries which can be cleaned up by the scanner will have a box with a green checkmark in it next to the entry
  • To clean up these entries click on the Clean up checked items button
  • If you accidentally check a file NOT recommended for clean up, you will get a warning message and if necessary can re-select the entries you want to clean up
  • Once you have cleaned the selected files, you will be prompted to re-boot your computer - please do so
  • When you have re-booted, please post a fresh HijackThis log into this thread and tell me how your computer is running now
Thanks

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.

Thanks for the extra tools, as I'm still getting those messages from my admin that there's some unknown program dumping the massive amount of bandwidth.

The Sophos scan I did, following your instructions, and it said it found nothing and there were no error messages.

The only new program I've installed this week is Amazon's Unbox.

Hi jannel, do you know what this could be HideJournal2[1].exe 1072? I have found some info on HideJournal, but not as an .exe

The logs are looking good, the data dump doesn't seem to be malware related. I suggest that you post in the network forum. I chase infections and not too savvy when it comes to this sort of thing. Networking

I have no idea what HideJournal could be. I use LiveJournal? But it shouldn't be anything related to that.

Thanks, I'll post in the Networking forum as well.
