Hey guys, I am in need of your help.

When I double-click on "My Computer" on desktop, the window opens but no drives are shown in the window.

I can wait for hours and no change. I click to close it (either through Ctrl+Alt+Del or by hitting X) and it finally shows me that "My Computer is no longer responding."

I choose End Now and the screen goes to a blank wallpaper. It remains in this state for 5-20 minutes.

Now, here's the thing that really has me puzzled on it... This happens intermittently! So I gotta cross my fingers and hope it doesn't freeze on me when I want to open My Computer.

Lemme know if you have any ideas on this.

ok, rule that one out

start > run
services.msc
<enter>

scroll down to Windows IMage Acquisition service

double click, set the startup type to DISABLE

Click OK, OK

reboot

see if the problem repeats

Thank you for your help!

At this point the problem is no longer showing up. But as I said before, this is an intermittent problem...

So we'll see if it is truly fixed or not. <crossing fingers>

Well as I was afraid. The problem has reared its head again. The computer is still freezing when I try to go into "My Computer."

Any new ideas?

I have exactly the same system, and I had this problem too... Do you have a printer-scanner or anything like that with memory card readers?

No, I don't have anything like that connected to this computer.

I'm about at my wit's end with this computer.

This same problem, though with much less "blank screen" time, just happened on another computer in our network.

Could this be some sort of virus/malware?

I still think its a problem with windows somewhere.

The second computer is identical to the first.

Hmm... If the 2 computers are the same... Then I'd say chances of malware just increased. Why don't you stop by the malware section before we look into this further.
