I went through everything listed in the Malware removal guide. This is what I got accomplished and better yet what I didn't :tazz:

Clean up: Could not do because I have XP Pro and unsure if it 64 bit or not.

Ad-ware: Succesful! Found like seventy something things to clean.

CWShredder: Succesful! Said I was clean.

Spybot S&D: I have already installed on my pc and could not finish a scan before I came to this forum, and could not today. It freezes up before the scan is done. It found the usual gator.com(2entries) before freeze up.

EWido: Got to 49% done and the froze. It had found like 17 infections before it froze.

Trend Housecall: This one was odd. It was telling me it was scanning but did not appear to be, but I let it go for a while, 15 minutes or so, and still nothing. It was if the program froze but not my computer. Odd. And then I went back later through the same link and got an error on that same page, don't know it was the site that was having a problem or they wouldn't let me back in. lol. Here is what the error said,
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005'

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

/virusAlerts.asp, line 7

So I went to the other on line scan
Panda Activescan: About 1/3 of the way through it froze. It found 2 spyware entries before it froze.

AVG: I used to have but no longer do. I have AntiVir. I have not been able to run a full scan on it either before a feeze up. My AntiVir seems to be acting wierd latley too. A security icon appears in my tray and tells me it is turned off, but its not. I have to pull up the program turn it off and back again to make the icon disappear. It also has been telling like everyday there is an update, which I find odd.

Trojan Hunter: Same thing with the freeze up. Got a goodways in and then it froze. It found 2 gator.com entries as well.

I have just updated my windows as of yesterday.

Everything seems to be fine when I am online, browsing is a little slower but no freeze ups really. It happened once to my daughter when she was playing a game. And it happened to me 2 times while in Java Chat. And then it did it once when it was on idle. But never fails when I run a scan. Like something does not want me to run them. Here is my Hijack this log. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Okay its been 2 weeks about since I first posted this. The thread is no longer visible in this forum. The only way I could find it was by looking at my last 10 posts. This is the link to that.
http://www.geekstogo...sult_type=posts The date was Jan.16th
I am still having the same problems with not being able to run my spyware and virus full scans. I have been somewhat successful when running partial scans. I downloaded a new version of my virus(AntiVir) 2 days ago and it seemed like things were working better, but was wrong. It freezes to the point where all I can do is turn off the computer by unplugging it, that is the only way I can get it off, task manager will not come up either. Since my last post other things have gone wrong here and there, one being my start menu would not work for a day or so, and my Spybot S&D icon on my desktop keeps relocating itself. If someone could look at my log I would appreciate it. Thanks. :tazz:

Hello Kelly and welcome to Geeks to Go

Apologies for your wait, it is sometimes a little manic here and always busy.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen.

You have some malware but I doubt that cleaning it will stop the symptoms you describe. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Spyware Doctor from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything..

Also please disable Ewido Guard from running for the same reason. Open Ewido>Status and remove the Guard option. You may be required to reboot for the change to take effect.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those two programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner

Please visit Kaspersky for an online scan. Please select extended in the scan settings to access this option, and you will find it to be the second option from the top. Please post the log with your reply.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GotSmiley] C:\Program Files\GotSmiley\GSYUpdater.exe /update
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai....23/cpbrkpie.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select Delete on Reboot
  • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
C:\Program Files\GotSmiley\GSYUpdater.exe
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, and under the heading of Utilities uncheck Ewido Security Suite log, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

Thank you for the quick reply, I know it gets crazy busy around here my thread is already on page 4! :)
Okey dokey, I accomplished everything you asked me to do except for the Kaspersky scan. I tried to it when told to in the list of things to do, and I froze at 11% through it. And I also tried again after I completed everything, again it froze at 11% completion. I swar it is like something does not want me do scan my computer. :tazz: Anyway here is my new HJT log, thanks again.

Hello again

I understand the scan problem; it is very frustrating.

That last HJT log shows nothing of any significance.

Please run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
Let's hope that improves thngs for you. I still want to be sure that active malware is not the cause of your problems, so there is another scan to be done.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Alright I was half successful again. I was unable to run the sfc /scannow scan, I tried twice and got froze up both times. I was really looking foward to seeing its results, but dern it, it would not complete the scan before freezing. I was however able to complete the WinPFind scan. :tazz: Here is the contents of the scan below. I hope this helps us some.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hello again Kelly

The WinPfind log is negative which is pretty indicative of your problem not being malware related.

Can I suggest you keep trying the SFC, it is possible that the scan progresses just a little further each time until it completes.

You may also wish to post in our Windows XP forum for further assistance.

Well I guess there is good news in knowing that malware is more than likley not my problem. :)
I tried to run the SFC scan a few more times and was unsuccessful. Each time it froze in a different spot, it was not getting further each time. Just wanted to tell you thank you for all your time and effort in trying to resolve my issues with running scans. I appreciate it. I do feel much better knowing we cleaned up some things and alot of garbage that was in there. My PC does seem to run a little quicker than previous, so that is good. I am starting to think it may be either something really simple like being my memory is almost full, I know I need at least 14% free disk space to run my defrag, I only have 9% left. So maybe that has something to do with it. Or it could be something really bad and unfixable, and in that case I will just have to get a new PC, boo hoo, j/j I really want something new. I guess I will head over to windows XP forum and post there maybe someone there has heard of or fixed a simliar problem. Again thanks so much. :tazz:

Hello again Kelly

Just make a little more room first.

Please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Compress Old Files

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).

Guess what happened when I tried disk clean up? You got it, it froze. And I am a little unsure on what to delete after the %temp% command. Eveything that is not a folder? Right? There is an awful lot of stuff in there, but there is also alot of folders. Just want to make sure I got it right before I delete all that. Everything that is not and does not look like a folder? Thanks, I just posted it the Windows XP forum as well, and I just got a response but haven't read it yet. Thank you, Kelly

Yes and I would even open the folders and delete the stuff inside them. If anything is in use, you won't be able to delete it anyway.

It is possible that this is what is wrong with your PC.

Hey I was told in the other forum to type prefetch in the run box and delete all that, and I did and it freed up enough space to run my defrag, so I did, and then I did another disk clean up and I COMPLETED IT!! :tazz: Now I have 16% free disk space compared to the 9% I had. I am going into %temp% now and delete all that, that should help a ton too, just completing a scan I could not do before is great progress. When I am done with deleted everything in the temp, I am going to try and run a virus scan and see if I can, or try the SFC scan and see if I have any luck. Thank you.

I am a tad out of practice with OS fixes, but anything under 15% free space is a potential problem these days. Mind you a 2nd HDD would do the trick for you. They aren't expensive these days either; I have three in my PC, and they are fairly straightforward to install too.

Glad it's working out for you.

Yea I kinda had a feeling under 15% was bad, well now it's up to 17%! I deleted all that in temp, it was 1,416 things!!!!! Woah! only 2 I could not delete, and then I went into my bin and emptied it again. About to try a scan now, and yes I have been thinking about gettin more memory for this machine, just havn't got around to it. Going to do a scan now *crossing fingers* If it works then my gut was right, I just did not know how to go about cleaning up all that, now I have notes of it all and I guess I need to do that every month or 2, eh? Thanks again!

No, daily!!!

I use Ccleaner probably 3 times a day and I do a major clearout once a week :tazz:

BTW, now that you cleared all the prefetch files (good idea) your Windows will be just a little slower until it builds them back up again. Only clear those if you are desperate for space.
