Computer restarts incessantly within 1 minute of startup [RESOLVED]

Sorry, didn't have time to write an explanation b/c the computer restarted...

I tried to uninstall AVG, but it didn't help. I Googled the problem and several posts say it has something to do with the firewall. I tried turning off the windows firewall too, but it won't turn off! After I turn it off through the security center, it still shows that it is on. The computer won't allow me enough time to download and install updates (and the only one available is sp3...).

Should I post in hardware or software instead??

This has happened once before and went away after I completely turned off AVG, restarted and did an AVG update. I tried that again but it didn't work. What hapens is that as soon as the computer starts up, a window pops up saying that Generic host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. It also mentioneds DCOM Service Process Launcher and says it was initiated by NT Authority\System.

Please help! It restarts after 60 seconds of turning on!!

Symptom

During an Ad-Aware scan, your computer may shutdown with an error message "System shutdown initiated by NT Authority/system System must restart because DCOM server process launcher terminated unexpectedly"

Cause

This is most probably caused by a malware known as KILL-AV (detected by Ad-Aware as Win32.Trojan.KillAV), which attempts to thwart Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus programs by restarting the computer before a scan and removal is complete.

Solution

To remove this malware. Scan with Ad-Aware. When the box pops up containing the error "System shutdown initiated by NT Authority/system System must restart because DCOM server process launcher terminated unexpectedly", cancel the scan immediately and click next. Quarantine / Remove any Win32.Trojan.KillAV objects that are found at this point. Let the computer restart and the malware file should be removed after reboot. Perform another Ad-Aware scan to see if anything is left

Boot up the computer and login. Go to Start->Run and type in shutdown -a. That should halt the shutdown process. Now go here for the FixBlast download. It sounds like it could be the Blaster Worm. Run it and see if it fixes the problem.

See if you could run this patch.

Download Dcombobulator and run it to disable the DCOM service.

Get the Malicious Removal Tool and run it on the computer to see if it finds anything else wrong.

hello, and thanks!

the shutdown -a command didn't work and the computer restarts before i can finish the fixblast scan. ideas??

i will try to run the tools in safe mode, hope that's ok. i also tried disable automatic restarts upon system failure when tapping F8 on startup, but that didn't work either. thinking that's probably the same thing you had me do in the command prompt?

ok, ran the scan in safe mode, and it found nothing. tried to install the patch, but got an error message that said can't be installed with any service packs in xp. not sure i want to go ahead and remove all sps... also ran the malicious software removal tool, which also found nothing. will restart in normal mode to see what happens.

nope, got the same message:

GENERIC HOS PROCESS FOR WIN32 SERVICES HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE. WE ARE SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.

if i don't hit send or don't send in the error report request window, i have about 2-3 minutes before the smaller window pops up saying the computer will restart in 60 seconds initiated by the NT Authority.

i disabled the DCOM with the download in normal mode and restarted again. same thing still.

So you did install SP3 already? I thought you saw it as an available update but didn't install it yet.

Then, yes, there is a very big chance that it's caused by the SP. Try using a restore point to go back before SP3 was installed.

you know, i didn't think i actually installed it, but yesterday i went into add/remove programs and viewed the updates and sp3 was installed. do you think i should try to remove it or should i do system restore?

Give the uninstall a try. It might give you a warning that uninstalling it may cause problems with other programs/updates. Choose to continue.

ok, the oddest thing happened. the first and second system restore attempts did not work so I undid the last system restore and voila! for some reason things are working fine. it scares me a bit though, since i don't know why or if it will come back. what do you think??

I would monitor it for a day or more to see how things are going. If all it well, you should be good to go. Otherwise, post back here or better yet, at the Windows board since it's more related to that.
