I have a Compaq Compaq CQ50-215NR laptop with Vista Home Premium. I am trying to create a System Image on DVD. I have tried seven or eight programs, everything from Drive Image XML to Paragon DBE to Norton Save&Restore 2.0 to Acronis True Image Home 2009; but they all fail when writing to DVD. Sometimes after 10 minutes, sometimes after the first disc is completed. I have been able to write/read a data disc and have done a system recovery just in case. No change, however. The system has enough drive space and RAM and I am using the highest level of compression to reduce the number of DVDs. Any suggestions?

Writing system images such as Ghost/Acronis or whateber straight to DVD rarely works, and even when it does there's no guarantee that the data's even readable. There's too many factors and too much to go wrong for this, and I'd subscribe to the theory that just because you can do it doesn't mean it's the best solution.

You'll do far better to clone the installation to an external hard drive instead.
