I have a Phillips SPD2412T ATA dvd/cd-rom drive and when I try to open the drive via 'Computer' by either double clicking the icon or right click and open, I get a message saying - "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" Also, the cd-roms I have recently burnt music to, now won't play in my cars cd player! I'm running Vista home premium by the way. Thanks in advance for any help given, Gary |

QUOTE I try to open the drive via 'Computer' by either double clicking the icon Do you have any disk in there? QUOTE the cd-roms I have recently burnt music to, now won't play in my cars cd player! Some car players (especially older ones) may be really picky. |

Yes there is disk in the drive, and the cars cd player did play disks up until I've had this problem on my pc.
The problem only happens when trying to open .cda files This post has been edited by graisbeck: Nov 12 2008, 12:54 AM |

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig Click OK (hit Enter in Vista). Click on Startup tab. Click Disable all Click Services tab. Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services Click Disable all. Click OK. Restart computer in Normal Mode. See what happens. What AV, and firewall are you using? |

No change after following your instructions i'm afraid.
I wonder if it's a problem when burning the disk on my pc, as other disks that have software burnt to them work ok. I use WMP 11 to burn the files. My A/V is Kaspersky Internet Security v7 and I'm using Windows firewall. This post has been edited by graisbeck: Nov 13 2008, 04:18 PM |

See, if turning Kaspersky off will change anything.

Disable Windows firewall momentarily.
Something in Normal Mode is blocking the access. Do you have UAC on, or off? Another thing to try... Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows Vista: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/ Log off, and login to Admin account. See, if you can access the drive from there. When done, make sure to disable the above account, back. You don't want to mess it up. |

Hi Broni,
I've tried the above without success I'm afraid. I tried without UAC, Windows Firewall and enabled Administrator Account but still no change, even when I try music cd's that I've purchased. It's weird as there isn't problem with software cd-roms!!! |

Double check, if it still works in Safe Mode.

Uninstall that drive. It'll be reinstalled upon reboot.
If the above doesn't help... Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. You'll see two items: - ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel) - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel) Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm. Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled. |
