Hello, and thanks in advance for your assistance!!!

I am trying to remove malware from my computer & ran all the suggested programs. I removed a few things, but Activescan listed two dialers that I am having trouble locating:

Incident Status Location

Dialer:dialer.bjp No disinfected HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS\ZONEMAP\DOMAINS\ARCHIVIOSEX.NET
Dialer:dialer.akd No disinfected HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS\ZONEMAP\DOMAINS\SGRUNT.BIZ
Virus:Trj/Mitglieder.DQ Disinfected Personal Folders\Sent Items\FW: Is sent SMS\new.zm9[f22-013.exe]
Virus:W32/Bagle.EA.worm Disinfected Personal Folders\Sent Items\FW: \To_reduce_the_tax.zm9[Taxes.exe]
Spyware:Spyware/Cydoor No disinfected C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\AOL Spyware Protection\Backup\53426714.asw
Spyware:Spyware/Cydoor No disinfected C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Dummies\dummy.cd_clint.dll

Also, I am sure there are many programs that load at startup that I don't need, but I want to be sure I am not messing up my computer by deleting them in HJT.

I never use Microsoft Money, but there are tons of entries in the log for it.

I only use Yahoo messenger occasionally, so I don't need it to load, but I do have Yahoo as my homepage.

I have NEVER used iTunes, so I am not sure why there is a reference to it in my log.

I would LOVE to keep Real & QuickTime from loading on startup.

I received a message the other day from one of my security programs that "gcasservalert.exe" was trying to change my homepage. When I look up that program, it is the Microsoft AntiSpyware program, so is it corrupt? or is it a sneaky way for Microsoft to get me to change my homepage to MSN?

Here is my current HJT log:

Dear redpenpal, :tazz:

Welcome to the Geeks to Go forums.

We are currently studying your log. :)

You are currently running HijackThis from your desktop. Since HijackThis makes backups of any entries you fix, you should create a folder just to hold the HijackThis program and its backups, so the backups and the program are not accidentally deleted. Go to "My Computer", click on c:\ and then go to the "File" menu, choose New -> Folder. Name the folder "HJT" or "HijackThis" and then please move the "HijackThis.exe" executable there.

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log. :)

Dear redpenpal, :tazz:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
******************************

Microsoft Money and the iTunes applications are legitimate applications. iTunes is a "resource hog" on memory (RAM) but is a legitimate program. If you want to uninstall these programs, that is your decision.
****************************

Please download and run a Free Trial of Trojan Hunter at http://www.misec.net...rojanHunter.exe. Please restart your computer.

Please run the Housecall online virus scan located at: http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp. Follow the prompts to scan your hard drive for viruses. Select the "Autoclean" option so that Housecall will remove any viruses from your system. When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Then please run the Panda scan here: http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm. Delete any viruses found, and restart your computer.
*******************************

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-Aware SE at the following link: http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm

Restart your computer.
*************************

Click Start then Control Panel then Add and Remove Programs. Look for the following installed program/programs and if they are listed click on each one and then click on the Remove or Change button and if asked select "Yes" or "Ok" to remove:

Optional programs you can uninstall, through the Add/Remove program:

iTunes is a digital media player, written by Apple Computer, for playing and organizing digital music and video files. Additionally, the program connects to the iTunes Music Store (sometimes referred to simply as "iTunes" or "iTMS") which allows users to purchase digital music files that can be played by iTunes. However iTunes is a "resource hog" and uses ~3-4MB of memory and if disabled in MSCONFIG or deleted from the registry it will re-instate itself after running iTunes a few times. If you use the application that do not install it. See the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes

Uninstall the following program/programs through Add/Remove programs:

iTunes

Restart your computer.
**************************

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c.../search/ie.html

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.aim.com

Optional Fixes

I highly recommend you to fix these items:

realsched.exe - The Real Player automatic update utility. It has no real functional purpose. I would certainly stop this from running on startup. To disable "tkbell.exe" in the new version (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK. In addition, see this important link: http://www.help2go.c...article&sid=211. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
********************

qttask.exe - This is is a task tray icon which is used as a shortcut to a number of QuickTime related features. You really don't need this in your system tray. It is safe to remove this from your startup. QuickTime's most common purpose is for watching movies commonly in the .mov format. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
******************

ypager.exe - Yahoo! Messenger allows you to send instant messages. Available via Start -> Programs. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager.exe -quiet
******************

If you choose to remove iTunes, put a check next to the following entry as well:

O16 - DPF: {D719897A-B07A-4C0C-AEA9-9B663A28DFCB} (iTunesDetector Class) - http://ax.phobos.app.../ITDetector.cab
******************

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

I would like to uninstall at least the iTunes... I don't even know how it got on my computer.

Trojan Hunter I installed and ran and kept running until I gave up on a reply to my question and uninstalled it. It didn't find anything.

I ran the trend microsystems scan and it found some stuff which I deleted.

I ran the pandasoft activescan and it was in that scan that I found the "dialer" references that I copied and put in the original post. I could not find the files mentioned in the pathway, even after enabling hidden files, etc. per the forum instructions. So, I was wondering if they are there? Or if the activescan software was in error? (which I doubt).

Ad Aware SE is installed on my system and I ran it prior to the initial post. I plan to go through your recommended steps one by one again, but it will be Sunday before I can spend that much time on my computer because I work a 12 hour shift tonight also.

I will take all the suggested actions tomorrow afternoon after I sleep, and report my HJT log.

Thanks for your help, as I am only a moderat geek and not a totally educated geek!!! :tazz:

Dear redpenpal, :tazz:

I forgot a line in my last post so I added a line to the last post. Here is the line:

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

I didn't get a chance to take action on my computer today, and I work 12 hour day shifts the next two days and then am having surgery on Wed. I will try to get back to my computer later this week. Thanks for your patience, as this is something that I really want to get taken care of!!!

Thanks,

Dear redpenpal, :)

Take your time, no rush. :)

I really didn't find too many things wrong with your HijackThis log. But we will check a couple of things out to make sure, when you are ready and able to do so.

Good Luck and I hope you feel better. :tazz:

Best Wishes and Take Care. :)

Rambro:

Sorry it's been so long, but as I said I was having surgery. Also, since I live in the Houston area, a lady called Rita interfered with my computer cleaning!!!

I ran the requested fixes, and all that was found were a few tracking cookies which were deleted by the programs involved. Interestingly enough, the two "dialers" that Panda Software's Activescan identified with the last scan were no longer there, even though none of the other programs had found or deleted them... Very strange!!!

Here is the latest and greatest HJT log:

The computer is running fine, I was just concerned about the two dialers that the last Panda Software ActiveScan found but I could not find on my computer. Since it no longer finds them, I figure maybe it was a glitch in the on-line scanning software???

Thank you so much for your help. Particularly with stopping Real Player and Quick Time from loading at Bootup... I have a decently fast computer with 1 gig of RAM, but those two made startup a pain. I couldn't figure out how to make them quit loading.

One question: I use AOL intermittantly for my E-mail for purchases etc. Do I need the entries in the HJT log for AOL on bootup? Or do they need to run even if I only use it once every couple of days? I would like AOL only to run on those occasions that I need it... and sit there quietly as an icon on my desktop when I don't.

Thanks again for your help!!! :tazz:

Dear redpenpal, :tazz:

Dear redpenpal, I will address your AOL request in a later post, however, lets first run a couple more antispyware scans on your computer system to make sure.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
******************************

1. Prepare Ewido Security Suite for use:
  • Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install the Program.
  • Click on the "update" button on the left hand side of the window.
  • Click on "Start Update".
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
3. You should not run the program yet so Exit the program.
4. Reboot into 'Safe mode'. To reboot in Safe mode:
  • Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
5. Run Ewido Security Suite:
  • Open Ewido Security Suite.
  • Click on the "scanner" button on the left hand side of the window.
  • Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • After the scan is completed, save the logfile from the scan.
6. Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
7. Prepare in your reply:
  • Please post a fresh HijackThis log.
  • Please post the Ewido Security Suite log.
******************

Dear redpenpal, can you tell me who is your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Is it AOL? Do you have an e-mail account through AOL? Describe in detail how AOL is used on your computer. :)

Just looks like a couple of tracking cookies to me...

AOL was the first ISP that I had, back 15 years ago when there was only dialup. I have kept AOL in the "bring your own access" version only because with it, I have an E-mail address that I have had for all those years. I like my old friends to be able to find me. My primary ISP is Road Runner.

I d/l Yahoo messenger primarily to talk to one of my best friends who seems to spend all her time there. I only want it to run when I want to be there, it doesn't need to run all the time.

I d/l AIM because I read in some tech news that AOL was going to allow people to keep their AOL address and switch to AIM and still be able to receive E-mail via the web. This has turned out NOT to be the case, so I really don't need AIM at this time. I plan to get rid of AOL sometime in the next few months, but I have a LOT of businesses and people I need to notify of the switch since it is the primary address I have used for internet purchases (and forum memberships) LOL

I do have one question about an entry in the HJT log:

O16 - DPF: {329F26F7-0D07-4038-8338-1C04446B906E} (DemoShield DemoNow Class) - http://www.raxco.com...our/demonow.cab

What on earth is that?

Thanks for all your help!!!

Debbie

PS According to my Zone Alarm logs, something on my computer is trying to access the internet every 1-10 minutes. I suspect maybe webshots... but I have to do some testing to see... Do you see anything else in my log that would continually try to access the web?

Dear redpenpal, :tazz:

From the O16 line you mentioned in your last post, have you visited/or and downloaded any software from this web site: http://www.raxco.com/products. I would not fix this O16 line.

From your Zone Alarm Firewall message that you are getting, their should be a IP address your computer is trying to access, for example, 127.0.0.1, can you tell me what IP address your computer is trying to access?
*************************

Here is the second antivirus scan I want you to run. :)

(Note/Disclaimer: Hi redpenpal, in this next post, I would like you run another antivirus scan. When you download and install this application, it likes to install itself in a temporary folder by default, which is not a good idea. The thing is that if you ever tried to do a Disk Cleanup of your system (which is a good idea and should be done frequently) these files will be deleted and the program will not run. My instructions below, will give you a way to install this program, without it installing itself (by default) in a temporary folder which could be deleted (you probably should have the winzip application on your computer to install the application to a different directory.). See also my link on removing temporary files: http://www.tech-reci...cipes&rx_id=463. Good Luck!) :)

I would like you to download a program to your computer that will check for bad, hidden, files that the HijackThis program may not recognize.

Please create a folder on your desktop and rename it to something like "MWAV or MWAV application".

Please download the free MWAV antivirus tool from here: ftp://ftp.microworldsystems.com/download/tools/mwav.exe.

Save the downloaded "executable file" to this folder and "extract it" to this folder. Do a search for a file called mwavscan.com and double click on this file. The MWAV antivirus tool application should run.

Follow the prompts to scan your system for viruses. Then please post for me the log of infected files from the BOTTOM panel of the scan window in a reply to this post.

(Note: When you run the MWAV antivirus tool scan, I do not want the log produced when pressing the view log button. When you run this application to scan your computer, you will see two panes or panels. By pressing the "view log button" it will give you the information in the top pane or panel. I want you to post the information in the bottom pane or panel. The title for the bottom pane/panel should say: Virus Log Information. Please post the information in the bottom pane/panel in a reply to this post.)

Please restart your computer and then post a new HijackThis log, along with the log from the MWAV antivirus tool application.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

I do not remember visiting the raxco.com site... and I have definitely not downloaded any of their software.

There are many different IP addresses that my computer is trying to access. A lot of them end in "80" such as: 66.99.237.55:80 and 81.52.248.216:80 but some do not. It doesn't give the address most of the time, but there are some that are listed as: a676.g.adamaitech.net, IGMP.mcast.net, and unknown.level3.net. The biggest majority of them have no address listed that they are trying to access and no program listed in the program column that is trying to make the outgoing contact. Fortunately, Zone Alarm blocks them all... but I'd like to find the darned culprit and rip it from my computer and throttle it!!! LOL I was in the process of looking at all my running processes and seeing if one of them could be it. There is one called E_S10IC2.exe that I don't remember seeing before??? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I just HATE it when people mess with my stuff!!!

I will go and run the MWav scan and another HJT log and post again.

This thing is going to make me crazy!!!

Thanks for your patience and all your help!!!

A couple of notes... the MAV program would not allow me to put it anywhere but the temp folder. When I told it to run, it would automatically unzip and run the files from the temp folder. It found lots of things that some of the other spyware programs found. Is it possible it is seeing some of those things in the "vaults" of Ad Aware and Spybot? Many of the things I remember "fixing" in other programs, but some of them I don't... so there are probably some there that I didn't know about...

Also, there was no option to "fix" any of the items with this program, so all of the items are still on my computer.
