Hi I have an Acer Aspire 5735Z and hate Vista, I have used Fdisk to remove all partitions including the EISA partition but when I try to load XP the machine blue screens half way through the initial setup, before the set up partitions screen, any ideas.

For what its worth, I have found Vista to be a good op system for 1st time users. Anyone who has ever used a system before will not like it, (it's almost like your Mom asking if "Do you know what you're doing?" all the time. happy.gif

I'm not sure what is coming down the pike, but if XP is so bad, why does Windows7 have a XP virtual option in it?

I recently bought a new Dell Vostro 220 MT computer with Vista Business software and find that some of my old software does not operate properly. I was considering downgrading to Windows XP, the system on my old Dell.

I have the full set of discs from my old computer, could I use them to downgrade to Windows XP ??

Any advise appreciated.

I forgot to mention that the main problem is that when I go to print from one of my old programs that I use to run a small company, I get the message "REPDES32.exe has stopped working".

You'll find if you contact Dell, you are entitled to a XP downgrade as you are using the Business edition (it lets you downgrade to XP Professional), at least I know it does with the Toshiba laptops I sell.

Or you could get the upgrade to Windows 7 Professional and then use XP mode, it works great, I've been playing with it the last few days.

If you need any further help than this, feel free to start a new topic. wink.gif

Hi Troy,

Thanks for the info.
My problem is that some old software does not work in Vista, I doubt then that it will work in Windows 7.

I loaded Virtual PC to run my old software in Windows XP,this got rid of most of the problems, but it does not recognise USB ports so my USB printer does not work in Virtual PC.

Does Windows XP running in Windows 7 recognise USB ports ??

I have ordered a Windows 7 upgrade, just in case I need it.

cheers

I'll have to get back to you on that, I just had a quick look at setting my printer up but it didn't want to recognise it. I can, however access, USB backup hard drives.

Another option would be print to file, save that across and then print it from 7.

Hi Troy,

Yes I have already started printing to file, but it is time consuming. Let me know how you get on with your printer. Have you tried loading the printer driver into your XP partition?

I presume that upgrading to Windows 7 will cause me to lose all of my data?.

cheers

An in-place upgrade wouldn't, no, but a custom (clean) install would. I had a few goes at my printer but no luck so far.

regcleaning is done too,
I believe I may have found one of your problems. Registry cleaners are never (as in not ever) a good idea. They are crap. I can't stress this enough.

I have to respectfully disagree. A good reg Cleaner can solve problems and tweak performance. We aren't all savvy in the way of registry's and the manual methods of optimizing them. A good reg cleaner/tweaker and a good malware prog are a must. My XP runs like a top and I don't have any issues with hang ups, delays or other classic windows problems. Oh, and a good firewall is mandatory as well. All have to be updated daily at a minimum.
Too many programs that are running in the background are not good for any OS. And not all programs are compatible with one another. Case in point, my Magic Jack does not like my UNRT game. Every time the phone rings the game crashes. LOL. But I have learned to deal with that problem. Nothing is perfect, except maybe MAC.

There is no such thing as an "ultimate solution". It doesn't exist. This applies to Mac, Linux, XP, Vista, and all other OSs.

True. Familiarity is a good way to optimize any OS. The more time you put into a thing the better it will run. But LINUX is by its nature more simplistic and therefore more stable. IMHO
