Admin, any chance of restarting this thread as I believe that if we all recontribute to it a second time from zero there might be both newer tweaks and some which have been overlooked.
In fact, a hall of fame for tweaks might be called for here. Simply, those tweaks that everyone feels to be real great could be posted up perminately in a thread like now but, unlike now, the comments, questions and replies to those questions could be removed after a set period of time(a week perhaps), something that would leave a very neat thread good for refferal for victems from other treads in the forums(i.e, "Please see post no. 3 in treaks hall of fame thread"saving your staff time and efford especially in the case where it is a very common tweak) One important point would be to explain in the first post the nature of the hall of fame thread so that no one minds having their comment removed after the set period. Perhaps you could also give credit to the original poster while reposting it yourself thus your then being both able to both edit the post where needed while also being able to remove those flashy things like animations which are a bain to weak computers on dail-up modems. |

In response to #2 I am not sure I would go out promoting the disabling of the indexing service but that may be because I use search a lot. Mainly its the bad experience that have come to me and the time wasted trying to get a little performance enhanced at the sacrifice of countless hours. But the times that I thought that it might be useful..... boy was I in for some headaches.....my recommend.... dont mess with the indexing service. ....

The indexing service does NOT improve search performance except with extremely complex type searches but the minimal performance gain in a situation no one uses does not reflect the reduced system performance as windows constantly indexes all your files.

QUOTE(Smokey @ Aug 5 2004, 04:54 PM) Tweak #2: Turn off Indexing to Speed up Response Time If you don't extensively use the search feature in XP, this next tweak is for you. By extensively, I mean like everyday. Windows XP has this "feature" called "Indexing". It's supposed to speed up searches by keeping all the files on your computer tied to memory. By tying up these files to memory, it can really slow things down. Disabling this service will remove this files from memory, inturn giving your applications and files faster response times. You will still be able to search with the Indexing turned off, but the searching will just take a little log to perform. To turn off Indexing: 1. Open up "My Computer" 2. Right-click on your hard drive (usually "C:") and choose "Properties" 3. Uncheck the box at the bottom that reads "Allow Indexing Service to..." 4. Click OK then the files will be removed from memory. This removal may take a few minutes to complete, but it's worth it. You will also need to disable the indexing service here too: 1. Go to "Start", then "Run" 2. Type "services.msc" and press enter 3. Scroll-down to "Indexing Service" and double-click it 4. If the service status is "Running", then stop it by pressing the "Stop" button 5. To make sure this service doesn't run again, under "Startup Type:", choose "Disabled" Is it normal if something comes up about acouple files and says Ignore All Ignore Retry Close, because it came up once and I ignored it, is that normal? |
