Guys, I'm about to go nuts.

I have run everything. I have spent two weeks immersed in malware forums, web searches and the guts of my system. I know more about my registry and DLLs and msconfig and process monitors than I ever cared to know. And I'm still flummoxed.

The bottom line: explorer.exe is establishing a remote TCP connection via a revolving series of ports, in the 1000-4000-ish range. Meanwhile, Internet Explorer has a pesky redirects issue -- the good old search-result-redirects issue (to sites such as monstermarketplace et al.). Amid it all, explorer is chewing up lots of CPU and everything is just SLOW.

Some details:

The remote address to which explorer.exe is connecting is 209.160.26.253 (http). As I say, it remains there for 30 minutes before switching ports and establishing a new connection to that address. My port monitor program tells me the module wininet.dll is involved. I can kill the TCP connection, but it will eventually reappear and resume the 30-minute cycle.

Using this same port monitor, I see that the remote address 209.160.37.23 gets momentarily connected when I heard toward Google or Yahoo in Internet Explorer. (I use Opera for primary browsing, and it's not an issue there.) My hosts file is fine. I've tried all the other standard fixes for redirect problems.

Incidentally -- perhaps related or not -- I'm unable to use Windows Update via Internet Explorer, which is why I'm still stuck here with XP SP2 and IE6.

The two remote addresses are similar, so I'm guessing these two issues may be linked. This all started a couple of weeks ago. None of the programs you'll see in the below HJT log were installed around that time (or even anytime recently), but I'm throwing the log here anyway just for the record. (FlashGet will catch someone's eye, I'm sure. It's been on my system for years.)

I have additional information gleaned from programs such as Process Explorer, if anyone wants to start digging in with me here. If I knew how to log what's happening during each of these sequences -- the explorer TCP connect and the IE redirect -- I could probably offer even better info. I've tried Winternals' Process Monitor program, but the event capture gets a bit overwhelming for me.
