Thanks in advance for your help.
I am having a dickens of a time since yesterday on my wife and kids' computer.
It inexplicably shut down. Upon restart, it started to boot into a loop and then shut down.
It wouldn't go into safe mode but was able to start several times using various options.
Today, while trying to run Spybot S&D, it shut down in the middle.
I thought it was a goner because nothing would work.
Finally, selective start up got me going enough to run hijack this.
The error I get is:
Stop:c000021a{fatal system error}The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with status of0x00000402 (0x00000000 0x00000000) The system has been shut down.

HJT log removed, If one of the techs helping you thinks you may have a malware issue he will instruct you to post a HJT log in the malware forum,
Looking at your log however I see no evidence of malware

1: Try to boot in last known configuration.

2: Try to restore the system to a previous date.

Thanks for looking at my issue.
Sometimes it will let me do that, sometimes it won't. Of all the options on startup, it seems nothing works twice in a row.
It finally let me in safe mode and is running normally at the moment.

Have you tried to restore to an earlyer date? In safe mode (or in normal mode, if possible) click start > help and support > undo changes made to your computer with system restore. Choose a date to a time before the problem started and restore.

Fatal Error c000021a is almost always caused by a dying hard drive or faulty computer memory.

Wow!. The computer is only a year old.
Is there any way to check which it is?

Hi blackstone yes,

This could also be registry corruption.
If that is the case if you can not get into safe mode.

I use This Meathod to recover windows Xp registry using the recovery console. Try going back a few R #'s

In order to run Hard drive diagnostics we need to know the make and model of your hard drive. If your computer is boot-able and you can login you can run everest to find out in my signature. If not you can look on the actual hard drive itself.

To run memory diagnostics download memtest86 in my signature. Burn the ISO using a ISO burner to a cd. If your CD-burning program does not burn ISO images you can use http://www.deepburner.com. Then run the test overnight report back if you have any errors from either diagnostics.

EDIT:
On a casual glance of your HJT log I noticed you had GoogleDesktop Installed. Try uninstalling it and see if that fixes your issue. We do not like the Hijack this logs to be posted anywhere besides malware forum for your safety of your data and operating systemand if we need to look at your startup programs we usually try other methods of troubleshooting. I have notified a Mod for it's removal. If we feel that your problem is malware related we will direct your accordingly to the malware forum.

Thanks for your help.
Right now, I am running so I assume I don't need to do the registry recovery.
Everest tells me that my c drive is a WDC 40gb. My e is a maxtor 30 gb.
I have downloaded memtest
Once it's on the cd, how do I run it?
Does it run on boot or can it run by selecting it?
Glad you feel sorry for us techno-dunces.

To run memtest you just boot to it.
What is the make and model of your computer?

If your system is bootable usually on c21a error message in my experience they are not. Lets go ahead and get the minidumps if they are there.

To get the Minidumps do the following

1 > Create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like.
2 > Navigate to %systemroot%\minidump You can paste that address in address bar to get there. Then copy the last few minidump files to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by date.
3 > Close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder. Please do NOT compress them in .rar
4 > Use the "add reply" option upload that zip file here as an attachment.

It is a generic computer.
My son had a training class and part of it was to build a computer.
I'll get the minidumps and post here in a sec.
I'm on my computer so, I need to shoot this info over there
