Very clever disk space viewing utillity:

SequoiaView: scans your hard drive or any given directory and creates a graphical representation of the files, represented by proportionally sized rectangled, color-coded to what filetypes they are.

Free Remote access program

Logmein Free: web based remote access program; very stable and very useful

I may have missed this freebee, but I have used Netscape since I started dancing on the net, many, many years ago. It has always been, and still remains, my first choice of Internet Browsers and e-Mail Clients.

Why anyone would pay for an e-mail client and a delivery service on top of that is beyond me!!! :woot: It is fast, easy to setup, and leaves IExplorer in the dust...albeit V7 appears to have caught up, almost, just almost...not completely...for it's mail client is the pits and the whole enterprise is far too confusing for the majority of users...especially us old timers who have just discovered the joys of internetting :woot:

Netscape V8 piggy backs on IE and Firefox for some of its functions. As Firefox appears to ape Netscape in appearance and funtioning. Many devout NETSCAPERS have complained of this single mis-step :woot:

P.S. any browser that breaks down and prevents you from accessing your e-mail, and yet still works as a browser will permit you to access your mail, via www.mail2web.com. You can even get web page addresses there. As long as you have a legitimate address and password...you are in like Flint :whistling:

You can get archived copies of early versions... see below... The 7x series is the best. Version 8x has no e-mail client as such and piggy backs on the 7x series which needs to be loaded in the back ground if you are not going to use it regularly

In reference to back up freebees, trust me, there is no better backup service anywhere, then in your own computer. For all of its quirkiness, and deserved criticism, Windows still has the best backup service. Couple that with backing up to a burned CD, and you have it as good as you are going to get. Utilize: ntbackup.exe and save to a c:\Backups folder, if there is not one already there. Save all of your system32 fles, settings and documents to separate backup files for easy access...uncompressed. And if you have lots of space save a compressed copy of your whole Windows folder. Save a copy of your registry daily! Deleting the previous ones, so that you have about three of the most recent.

One of the best registry savers, for me, has been Windows own export service found in the regedit window, and "Registry First Aid" which is not free, but cheap. It has been a life saver for me, many times. And it saves a restore point on command [as does Windows], an auto-registry scan/save before every use, and it is the only registry scanner, as far as I know, that will allow you to seek out and kill individual registry entries, without opening regedit and hand picking them one at a time. NOW THAT SOLD IT FOR ME! Especially, when I am tracking down trojan, malware and virus entries that the others have missed. My recent encounters/resolution with licensemanager.exe [trojan] was enhanced with my trusty RFA  :whistling: No other software allowed me root it out in as quick a time.

Any one who trusts their backups to off site services is inviting invasion and off-site problems, over which you have no control...floods, storms, tsunami, power outage, etc.. For pete's sake the governments can't even keep our private info to themselves.

Trust only your self and your own common sense.

I have tested many imaging devices, back up tools, ultimate whatevers, etc., and not one was worth the effort of setting it up and running it. Figuring out ISO processes is very daunting, in spite of protestations to the contrary. Not one, ever saved me the time or ultimate effort of slogging through a recovery. Mind you I still run about a half dozen of them on my system, but they are there to be tested as opposed to being counted on.

The closest recovery system that I have come to has been Norton and "Caldera" ...something to look into. It takes a bit of flipping disks in and out, but you get there eventually. Unless someone else has a better way to access DOS upon booting...so that you can work in DOS on a NT formatted drive. It has been the only one that has allowed me to access DOS over the complaints of XP. I have lots of recovery boot disks but none that will allow you to remain in, and play in, DOS.

The NTFS system from MS works to reccover and then access backups, but nothing will be better then burning all of your info to disks. Keep at least two recovery copies of your OS handy

Which CD Burning software would be the best for making audio CDs and data CDs? I'd like to burn some CDs of mp3s I have on my computer. I have a lot of vacation photos that my friend wants that I could only fit on a CD. Lastly, I have some video clips on my computer that I want to put onto a CD, probably as data.
