I've been getting an error message for a couple weeks now. Every time I start my computer, it takes for-ev-er to boot, and then I get the "Generic Host Process Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close" error.
I've read that others have fixed this by allowing server access thru zone alarm, but I've tried allowing that and still get the error. I've also posted a HijackThis log and was told I have no malware. Anyone know how to get rid of this error? Thanks! |

I had forgotten that I had already done that. But I went ahead and downloaded the wizard again and ran it. Rebooted twice and both times I still got the error.
What now? |

Yes, I do. It's an all-in-one 4215. I've had it installed for awhile, but just started getting the errors recently. However, I have been fooling around with the start-up list recently, and disabled all the hp stuff in msconfig.

Go to the HP Website and download the latest driver and/or software for your all-in-one...save the files to your desktop, but don't install them yet.
From Control Panel, double click on "Add or Remove Programs", locate any and all entries pertaining to the device, and uninstall them. Turn the all-in-one off and disconnect it from your computer. Reboot. Do you get the error? |

If you don't need the device for a little bit, let's leave it uninstalled and disconnected while we troubleshoot.
When you open "My Computer", does it take a while to display the contents and/or display a flashlight before the window populates? |

Is there any additional information associated with the error. Perhaps a file name or Program ID (PID) number?
Go back to "Add or Remove Programs". Make sure the box at the top to "Show Updates" is ticked and see if the update KB894391 is installed. Do not remove this, just see if it's there. |

Yes, that update is installed.
I rebooted and clicked on the link that tells me what would be reported to Microsoft if I choose to report the error. It says: Error signature szAppName: svchost.exe szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 szModName: unknown szModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000 Then clicking on View Tech Info about the error report, it says: The following files will be included in this report: c:\docume~\temp\WERd597.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp c:\docume~\temp\WERd597.dir00\appcompat.txt Hope I typed all that correctly - I couldn't figure out how to copy and paste from those windows. Thanks for all your help! |

Not much to help us there.
What Antivirus Program do you have installed? Is it Norton perchance? Click Start, then Run, type eventvwr.msc and click "Ok". In the left pane, click on "Applications", then look in the right pane for any errors that occur at about the time you booted the machine. Then, in the left pane again, click on "System" and do the same. Post me a couple of the most recent errors from each catagory. |

McAfee came with the machine, but I hated it so uninstalled and now run AVG.
From the Application errors: Source: VSS Category: None Event: 8193 Source: EventSystem Category: (50) Event: 4609 Source: Application Error Category: (100) Event: 1000 From the System errors: Source: DCOM Event: 10005 There's also a Service Control Manager error, but not the last couple times I booted. |

Do you use MSN Messenger? Is it on your machine and configured to run at Windows startup? I suspect that's one of the errors.

I don't use MSN Messenger, and I don't see the word "messenger" in either the services or start-up list using msconfig. Could it be called something else?
I have to go cook dinner now, probably won't be back till late tonight. Thanks again! |
