In msconfig startups, I think it's msnmsgr
You might also look in the Start menu and in Add or Remove Programs. If you find it, let me know. |

That patch didn't work either.
Dunno if this has anything to do with anything, but alot of times (not always) the buttons along the bottom of my screen (Start button and the buttons for the windows Ihave open) turn to old fashioned squares with a different font. This usually doesn't happen right at start-up, but several minutes after I open firefox. This did start around the time I started getting the Generic Host Process error message. |

Did you reboot after applying the patch?

I did reboot. That's when I always get the error message, right after everything is loaded.

Click Start>run and type %temp% then hit enter.
Locate the following files and email them to me please. If they appear to hold anything relevant, I'll post the info. \WERd597.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp \WERd597.dir00\appcompat.txt noahdfearATmsnDOTcom replace AT with @ and DOT with . Double click a DCOM error that corresponds to a time you recieved the Generic Host error, then click the clipboard button (right below the arrows in upper right corner), then right click and paste in a reply here. Then do one of the Service Control Manager errors as well. |

Here are the error messages. Didn't find the files, will go back and look again right now.
Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7032 Date: 9/23/2006 Time: 11:44:57 AM User: N/A Computer: D72WQS71 Description: The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Windows Management Instrumentation service, but this action failed with the following error: An instance of the service is already running. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. - - - - Here's the DCOM error. FWIW after I read this I went and re-enabled everything in start-up and services under msconfig and haven't gotten this error since. However, I'm still getting the service control manager error above, each time I reboot. Event Type: Error Event Source: DCOM Event Category: None Event ID: 10005 Date: 9/23/2006 Time: 11:26:58 AM User: D72WQS71\mejustme Computer: D72WQS71 Description: DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. BTW, remembered reading that the error may return after reboot (after applying that patch) due to being generated from the previous logon. Have you done a second reboot since applying the patch?

I just rebooted and got different errors in eventvwr.msc. I rebooted in order to check the Generic Host Process error to make sure I got those file names right. I still can't find them anywhere.

You may need to choose to send the error report for those files to be generated/located.

I chose to send the report last time I booted. Then looked in the temp files and didn't find either file. So searched in My Computer for all files and folders that contain appcompat as part of the file name and found nothing.
Did the same search with svchost and found 2 applications 14kb each. One in C:\i386 and one in C:\windows\system32. Also found a svchost file in prefetch and an EX_file in media\I386. |

Do a search for the following.
*.dmp *.*dmp Check the date/time to see if any correspond. (make sure it's an advanced search.......looking in hidden files and folders) This post has been edited by noahdfear: Sep 23 2006, 01:02 PM |
