My PC was recently infected with virus. Norton AntiVirus 2009 identified several viruses, originally listed one as a Trojan virus, which it was able to remove and then found a Generic.Packed.200 named virus it fails to remove. NIS identifies the virus as Generic.Pack.200. I've started and stopped the PC several times into and out of Safemode attempting to get NIS to remove without success.

Originally, I was unable to get the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to install; it would hang at the very end. I was successful then in executing from a USB device with the executable renamed. The original scan listed several files and registry entries infected and MBAM and was able to remove all except two. The MBAM has executed the remove of the two and cycled the PC immediately after the removal process. However after reboot, NIS identifes the generic.packed.200, fails on removal attempts, and new MBAM scans identify the two infections present.

I've executed the steps in the Cleaning Guide with some success. TFC completed successfully. SystemRestore failed and ERUNT ran fine. Malwarebytes was executed and log is attached; original and current. After reboot of the machine, the same two infections are identified. The RootRepeal application failed with the "Could not read the boot sector. Try adjusting the Disk Access Level in the Options dialog". I tried various options without success.

MBAM currently identifies two items yet infected: Rootkit.Trace HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\UAC and Trojan.Agent C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\uacinit.dll.

I also ran a GMER utility; its findings are listed below. It has always found processes with identified rootkit virus but the scan today does not find any. Not sure what's going on there.

Library \\?\globalroot\systemroot\system32\UACwmyqoobvdjjeptbbm.dll (*** hidden *** ) @ C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe [1596] 0x03460000
Library \\?\globalroot\systemroot\system32\UAClabrpdwktqlheakot.dll (*** hidden *** ) @ C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe [1596] 0x03530000

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ken

hi

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Posted Image

    Posted Image

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

In my initial attempt to execute Combo-Fix, the program started and proceeded to down load the window restore point software. During this, NIS dialog box popped up. I thought I had it all disabled. I had the option to Cancel from Combo-Fix, which I selected. I then disabled NIS fully I believe. Now in attempts to execute Combo-Fix, a dialog box is displayed with the message "You cannot rename ComboFix as Combo-Fix. Please use another name, preferbaly made up of alphanumeric characters". I did not try to rename the executable differently. I did reboot, disable NIS and tried to execute Combo-Fix again, and received the same message.

Any ideas?

I was able to download ComboFix to desktop without renaming, and the program was able to execute.

The output log is attached.

Thanks in advance,
Ken

hi

Please download OTM
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTM to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes

    :Services
    vtvpz
    :Reg

    :Files
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\kmiewt.sys
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM and reboot your PC.
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

Hi,

Here's my recent update and I have to start with several problems that I believe are compounding the issue.
1. On shutdown of the PC, it hangs on the Saving Settings screen. It'll hang for an hour and does not shutdown.. This has been happening for several days now. I have to hold down the powerbutton to force it to shutdown.
2. On shutdown of the PC, a dialog box is displayed describing the error as "svchost.exe error" with the details of "The instruction as "0x73d223b5" referenced memory at "0x73d223b5". The memory could not be "written".
3. On startup of the PC, a dialog box is displayed indicating "Data Execution Preventing - Microsoft Windows" "To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program" "Name: Generic Host Process for Win32 Service"
4. On startup of the PC, it lost its ability to connect to the wireless router.
4. On startup of the PC, Norton NIS continues to display Packed.Generic.200 as a treat with the "removal failed"

Ok, back to the updates. First, I executed the OTM. I pasted the code lines into the program and on the "first" attempt I clicked the CleanIt green button in error. I let the machine attempt to reboot - which required me to force it to shutdown. On startup, I reran the OTM program with the supplied code lines and here's the output:

Could not run the Kaspersky steps as the PC now has no internet connectivity. This problem just started on last Friday maybe Thurs.

Not sure what to do at this point.

Thanks in advance,

this fix your net problem ?

ComboFix will disconnect the machine from the internet, this prevents fresh malware from coming in.
The connection shall be restored once ComboFix gets to the Find3M stage.
In the event that ComboFix terminates prematurely you can manually restore the connection by ...
* Going to Control Panel > Network Connections.
* Right click on their Network icons & select "Repair"

Alternately, if the Network icon appears in the notification area in the lower right corner of Desktop, right-click it, and then click Repair from the shortcut menu.

Hi,

No, that did not work. The message reccived is "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action can not be completed: Disabling the wireless network adapter. Make sure your network adapter is properly installed." And, with attemps to disable the wireless network connection - "It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support plug-and-play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account."

Thanks,
Ken
