I am hoping someone who knows far more about this stuff than I do can help me with my adware problem. The main culprit is Winfixer, which likes to pop up every few seconds to inform me that my registry has errors and to ask if wouldn't I love to take advantage of their free scanner. It does this regardless of whether I'm actively using IE or not. When I Alt-F4 this dialog box, IE immediately goes to a Winfixer web page that tries to make it appear as if the scan (that I just clicked I didn't want) is running. This has to be closed out as well, of course, and then the whole spiel repeats itself two or three times before leaving me alone...for a few seconds, sometimes as long as a minute.

Also, there is something called CompariShopper that is running minimized at all times. At first it appeared as an icon in the system tray that could be 'exited' but would simply reappear a few seconds later. Then that went away and now it runs minimized with its little handle down in the taskbar, but the 'close' option in the right-click menu doesn't work at all. It is always there, reboots don't affect it.

There are other programs on here as well, most notably the old 'Poka Poka' online poker pop-ups, but WinFixer and the CompariShopper appear to be the most persistent and malicious offenders.

One or the other of these culprits always steals priority from any other programs that I may have running. For instance, I use game console emulators that require fullscreen mode from time to time, but nowadays I can't run them for more than a couple of minutes at a time at most before the computer blinks over to the desktop for no apparent reason. In programs that don't require a fullscreen takeover, sometimes the window titlebar just fades out as if it is now running in the background and I have to click in the window to get it going again even though nothing else visible is running.

I use Microsoft AntiSpyware, which I update daily. Lately it always finds and removes 'Navidad Worm,' 'Trojan.Nameshifter.xxxx,' and a 'Torjan.Nameshifter.xxxx,' where the xxxx parts change from day to day. As far as I know my version of XP is current on service updates as of a couple of days ago. Anyway, I do the reboot like it says after it is done cleaning but those items always show up in the scan again immediately after reboot.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
