Help with Step one of Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide, Trojan smp lx virus

I am following the steps in the cleaning guide. Right now I am trying to download and open MBAM. I think the virus I have is trojan spm lx. It will not allow me to run MBAM. I renamed the file, but now it asks which program i would like to open it with and I am unsure. Can anyone help me with this?
