My daughter’s XP pc is infected with Trojan Horse Downloader.Delf.12.AN. It has been there a long time. I tried to find ways to remove it.
I scan with Ad-aware, then Spybot, then AVG 7.5. I tried to remove it in "safe mode" with various tools. AVG is what detects it. It is detected in the following files on her PC:
C:\windows\system32\aaclien.dll
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
The file is protected and "Combofix" and "Killbox" can not remove it. Can someone help? There must be some other files controlling the premission to remove the virus. I have the XP Recovery Console installed.

Here is my is my Highjackthis log followed by my Combofix log.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Delete ComboFix.exe and the folders C:\qoobox and C:\ComboFix

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
  • A browser will open.
  • Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

Rorschach112,
Thanks again for helping.
I am at work and when I get home I will post the combofix and Highjackthis logs. Did you get the posting from the combofix that comcofix had me download to the Geekstogo web site?
After doing the previous procedure I ran Spybot and the BHO has been removed. Also the logs looked like they been removed. I ran AVG and it did not detect anything. I will reboot again and run AVG again. Is there another virus tool I should run?

Will post tonight, about six hours from now. Thanks again.

Yes I saw your previous post

Rorschach112,
Thanks again for helping.
I was delayed because I had to go to a funeral.
I reran AVG again and it said the trojan Horse virus is still in the PC. It is the same one Downloader.Delf.12.an.
It sees it at C:\WINDOWS\system32\aaclien.dll

I reran Sypbot and I do not see the BHO object that gets generated with the virus. I think the new version of spybot puts a safety BHO in the browser it to lock out others.

I ran Karpersky remote and here is the log it generated.

It's gone

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Rorschach112,
Thanks again for helping.
I reran AVG again and it did not see the trojan Horse virus. This is great. I think it is gone.
I started to download and cleanup. Removed Combofix, updated Java. The Microsoft will not install because maybe microsoft is no longer supporting updates. This is the following message when I try to update.

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify that your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates your Windows installation by checking Windows Product Identification and Product Activation status.

I am going to do your other advised installs. Thanks for solving my problem. I have alot of reading to do.

Thanks again for your help and this web site.
