Hi All - I want to set up a wireless router to my computer, so my son can play his PS3 without having to plug and unplug our internet connection. The PS3 has a wi-fi card installed. Here is where I get confused. If I hook up the router to the computer, do I need an adapter or does hooking the computer up to the router (which is hooked up to the internet) be enough? The PS3 should then pick up the signal from the router - right?!? I have an old computer that I also wanted to add to the mix, so a USB adapter should work for that - right?!? I think I am making it more difficult than it really should be, so "thanks" for any and all replies, help, etc.

Hello, and Welcome to Geeks to Go!
First off the configuration that you may be looking for is to plug your cable modem into the WAN port of the router. If it is a common router it has an antenna for the wireless and maybe 4 LAN ports available for wires to plug into. Your router should act as a DHCP server which will give your PS3 and computers an IP address. Just make sure your computers are set to automatically receive an IP address and you should be fine. If your question is, is it possible to use all 3 at once, yes it is with a router. You only have a finite amount of bandwidth to use from your provider so the more things you do on multiple machines, you may see it slow down a little bit, but overall you should be fine. |
