Hey people, I desperately need your help! Last night I was looking for a video online and came across one that said I needed to download an Active-X codec in order for the media to work. I wondered whether I should trust it (I had come across multiple webpages with the same thing, I wouldn't have trusted just a single page) and download the exe file, and I did. Big mistake. Now my desktop wallpaper is replaced with a red image of a nuclear hazard symbol and the words "YOUR PRIVACY IS IN DANGER" and asking me to download protection now. I am also getting pop ups with pretty much the same kind of message. One of them reads:

"Windows has detected an internet attack attempt... Somebody's trying to infect your PC with spyware or harmful viruses. Run full system scan now to protect your PC from Internet attacks, hijacking attempts and spyware! Click here to download spyware remover for total protection."

When I run the task manager (which was disabled at first but I re-enabled it with Task Manager Fix), I notice that explorer. exe is running at 99% CPU usage.

I have tried to find and eliminate the problem with Adaware and SpyBot, but to no avail. The problem keeps returning after every reboot.

Also note: I am running Win2k, NOT XP. My preferred browser is Firefox, although once in a while I use IE.

Can anyone help? I am desperate and need a solution ASAP! Thanks so much!

Hello twister6284

Welcome to G2Go. :)
=================
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
=================
After that Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

In case you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you have and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again. Because some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Umm. I tried to copy/paste rapport.txt here but apparently it's way too large?

ComboFix and HijackThis logs coming up shortly... (ComboFix is running right now.)

When I was in Safe Mode and running SmithFraudFix, right after it prompted me to clean the registry, I got a popup saying:

Cannot import cleanup.reg: Error accessing the registry.

Is this a problem with SmitFraudFix or just something that windows was doing? After SmitFraudFix closed, I saw a box checking how much space can be freed up on C:/. Perhaps this was an automatic windows cleanup utility?

So there you are. ComboFix and HijackThis logs.

It appears that my problem is fixed but I'm a little nervous it could show up again anytime, especially after my next restart whenever that may be. However, I think I'm fine. Please check the logs to be sure, because if the malware symptoms show up again soon, I may be back on here!

Do everything in the ComboFix and HijackThis logs appear to be smooth to you? Is there anything else I must do? Thanks so much for your help!

The reason for the error from Smitfraud is because of the Tea Timer from Spybot .
It guards the registry from Unauthorized changes.
===================================
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
