Hi bradfitz and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.
My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log. The trojan has backdoor functionality and includes a keylogger. It is invisable from the Task Manager and employs counter-removal tricks so that it's difficult to terminate the Trojan process. Furthermore the Trojan monitors the registry entries it adds so they're restored immediately if changed. ================================ Please print out or copy this page to Notepad because we will be working out of Safe Mode. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Step 1 A. Download Dellater.zip from here and unzip it to your System32 folder (C:\Windows\System32\). B Download Windows-XP-Prefetch-Clean-And-Control.exe from here. Step 2 Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
Step 3
Step 4
Step 5
Step 6
Step 7 Post a fresh HijackThis log. Regards, Trevuren |

Hi Trevuren, thanks for the welcome and quick response to this.
I just completed all of your instructions and it looks like this took care of it. I just ran Ad-Aware again and it did not find the "Backdoor.ProRat.16" trojan, 100% clean according to the scan. It's nice to see my CPU performance graph back to normal! Below is my new HJT log, am I correct in assuming that this trojan is gone for good? ~B ---Begin HJT Log--- Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 1:50:30 PM, on 11/29/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\TGTSoft\StyleXP\StyleXPService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\New Boundary\PrismXL\PRISMXL.SYS C:\Program Files\Dantz\Retrospect\retrorun.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Dantz\RETROS~1\wdsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Tablet.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPageSE2.0\OpwareSE2.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDBtnMgr.exe C:\Program Files\WDC\SetIcon.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\TGTSoft\StyleXP\StyleXP.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIndex.exe C:\Program Files\eFax Messenger 4.0\J2GDllCmd.exe C:\Program Files\Extensis\Suitcase 9.2\Suitcase.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WTablet\TabUserW.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopCrawl.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymSCUI.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.bradfitzpatrick.com/bookmarks/bookmarks.htm R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.gatewaybiz.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.gatewaybiz.com O2 - BHO: HelperObject Class - {00C6482D-C502-44C8-8409-FCE54AD9C208} - C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 7\SnagItBHO.dll O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: Ipswitch.WsftpBrowserHelper - {601ED020-FB6C-11D3-87D8-0050DA59922B} - C:\Program Files\WS_FTP Pro\wsbho2k0.dll O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll O3 - Toolbar: SnagIt - {8FF5E183-ABDE-46EB-B09E-D2AAB95CABE3} - C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 7\SnagItIEAddin.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OpwareSE2] "C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPageSE2.0\OpwareSE2.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WD Button Manager] WDBtnMgr.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SetIcon] \Program Files\WDC\SetIcon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Google Desktop Search] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe" /startup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [STYLEXP] C:\Program Files\TGTSoft\StyleXP\StyleXP.exe -Hide O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SysSense] C:\Program Files\SysSense\SysSense.exe O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O4 - Startup: Qumana DropPad.lnk = C:\Program Files\Qumana\Qumana.exe O4 - Global Startup: eFax DllCmd 4.0.lnk = C:\Program Files\eFax Messenger 4.0\J2GDllCmd.exe O4 - Global Startup: eFax Tray Menu 4.0.lnk = C:\Program Files\eFax Messenger 4.0\J2GTray.exe O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Suitcase Startup.lnk = ? Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN
There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean: 1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents. Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files: TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
3.Preventitive measures: Please read and follow the following advice by TonyKlein on how to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future: How Did I Get Infected in the First Place Regards, Trevuren |
