I'm not sure what all I need to get started, but I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 running XP Professional w/service pack 3, IE 7, AVG free, Webroot Anti-virus, Adware.

I did several automatic updates 2 nights ago, and ever since it's been very slow to connect to the internet. I only bought it a little over a year ago, and there's not much on it other than music. I don't download very much at a time anymore b/c we're on Satellite internet and we have monthly bandwidth usage limits and 3 computers to share it.

I run my AVG and Webroot full scans daily, and I just ran an Adware last night as well as in Safe Mode today and nothing showed up other than tracking cookies. I also today did a Defrag of the C:/, and a Disk Cleanup. I cleared all the temp. Internet files, history, etc. last night and again today. Nothing seems to help much. We are on a wireless network, and all of that is working okay, it just seems to be my laptop.

Yesterday, I did get a blue stop error screen, but I don't remember what the exact error number was. I restarted the computer like the screen said to do, and it hasn't happened again.

The freezing up when I disconnect the battery happened the first time last night. Then again a little while ago when I went to another room. I end up having to reconnect the battery, and restart the computer to get it to work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ETA: Wednesday - I ran into a new problem just now when I tried to boot up the computer. I got to my log-on screen to put in my password, and the computer froze up. I ended up having to turn it off, and back on. The 2nd time I was able to log-in, but it froze up while everything was starting up, and again I had no choice but to just turn it off. The 3rd time, it finally booted up okay, and now is working.

Thursday - a 2nd new problem...I was right in the middle of reading something online, and the computer restarted on it's own. It's happened twice today, the first time I got another blue screen Stop error (STOP:0x000000FC, 0xC0883CFC, 0x4A991863, 0xB7967B64, 0x00000001). I'm sure if that is the same one I got before, but I don't think it is. The second time was just a few minutes ago, and it froze again on the log-in screen, and it took another time of turning it off and back on, to be able to boot up normally.

Hello Jenn511b

Welcome to Geekstogo.

You may have used Malwarebytes before. If you have and still have it on your machine please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you do not have Malwarebytes please download from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
So when you return please post
  • MBAM log
  • the two RSIT logs - log.txt and info.txt

Note: Unless otherwise instructed always post the logs in the forum. It is likely these reports will not fit on one post. It might be necessary to break the logs up to get them on the forum. Just use as many posts as you need, that's fine. :)

Hi Jenn511b,

Nothing jumping out at me there.

Lets have a deeper look.

Download GMER from here:

http://www.gmer.net/files.php

Unzip it to the desktop.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst.

Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
Click on Scan.
When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread.

Hello Jenn511b,

Nothing there either.

Lets try this.

Kaspersky on line scanner is very thorough. It can take a long time and for periods may seem not to be working. Just be patient and let it do its job.

Kaspersky works with Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Cross posting - incorrect information replaced.

Thank you so much. And actually, the past day or so, it's been just freezing up and I have to manually turn it off and back on. I can be right in the middle of reading something sending a message to someone and it will completely freeze up. It happened probably 6 or 7 times last night alone, and a couple of times since I've been online tonight already, most recently just within 10 minutes ago. It was fine, and I left the room to go take care of something, was gone less than 20 minutes, and came back and it was frozen up.

Any suggestions there?

Hi Jenn511b,

Well we haven't completely ruled out the possibility of malware.

That Kaspersky scan will help us there but lets leave that for a moment and look at other possibilities.

First off, please go to Start > Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs (Programs and Features if you are a Vista user) and uninstall the following if they

exist:

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.:

Viewpoint Manager is considered to be foistware. You can go to the link below to read about it.

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

Next

I am wondering whether you might be having some program conflict going on. You have Webroot Spy Sweeper and Lavasoft Ad-Aware services both running at the same time. My bet is that they are fighting each other.

Why don't you try uninstalling one and see if that makes a difference. My preference would be to start with Spy Sweeper first and then move to Ad-Aware if you don't see an improvement. I guess you have the installer files saved somewhere in maybe a download folder so you can reinstall if you want to.

okay, I removed Viewpoint Media Player, then I removed Ad-ware, only b/c I have a year subscription to Webroot (it came with my laptop when I purchased it) and it's still got a while before it expires. I didn't really run Ad-ware that often anyway, b/c I use the Webroot daily. I only ran it extra the other night after I started having trouble.

I had to reboot after removing those programs, so when it was loading up, a box popped up (see pic)
error_msg.JPG
I have seen this in my processes before, but don't really know what it is or why it's on startup. I do have OneNote2007 with my Office suite, but can't recall ever using it. I did click on the web-selection option for a program to run it, thinking it might tell me what I removed that it used, but nothing came up that I could figure out.

Hello Jenn511b,

I think that entry is a left over from Office 2003. Only a couple of orphans for a shortcut button.

We should be able to to remove that. Just make sure your security programs are turned off so that they don't interfere with HijackThis.

Now

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O9 - Extra button: Send to OneNote - {2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49} - C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office12\ONBttnIE.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: S&end to OneNote - {2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49} - C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office12\ONBttnIE.dll

Close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HiJackThis.

After that post a new HijackThis log back here. Also tell me if the removal of Ad-Aware has made any difference to your machines performance.

The removal of Adaware seems to have helped a bit, I'll just have to see if it keeps freezing up. It's so sporadic when it does it. It hasn't happened in a while though, so maybe it's better.

ETA: I rebooted again to see if I got that OneNote2007 box again upon reboot, and it happened again. This time I've attached the webpage that came up after I clicked "Use the web to find a program to run" I didn't know which link to click on from here though.

Hi Jen511b,

I think we have removed the orphan ones but you still have an error poping up with the 2007 Office version.

I wonder if you got all the Windows updates whether that might solve the problem.

Try opening Internet Explorer and going to Tools > Windows update and following the prompts.

After you have installed all the updates they suggest come back and tell me if that has made any difference. :)

Okay, I installed several updates, but I wanted to let you know that when I first booted up my laptop today, it booted up fine, I got to the log-in screen to put in my password and when I hit enter it went back through another boot-up. This time I got another Blue Stop Error screen that said:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

Technical Information:
***STOP: 0x0000004E (0x0000008F, 0x00044EE8, 0x00044EEC, 0x00000000)

So after that I turned the computer back off, and back on. I then got a screen to either select to start Windows Normally or the Last Known Configuration that worked b/c of the manual turn off. It recommended to choose the Last Known Configuration if the reason for the turnoff was a Stop Error screen, so that's what I chose. It continued to boot up fine, I was able to log-in and everything booted up okay, but I did still get the same OneNote 2007 box. As well as a Windows Error - I'm including an image of what was included in the error as well as 2 links that were included in the "Find out more information online" link after the Error report was sent.

Now that I've installed those other updates, maybe that will help some of this, but I did want to include this latest issue anyway.
