Internet Problems, I can't connect to the internet, could this be the work of a virus

I have two computers, one desktop, and one laptop. Both of my computers use a wired connection to connect to the internet, but here's the problem: The internet works fine on my desktop computer, but when I connect my laptop the internet stops working on both. On my laptop, I get a message saying that I must renew my ip adress, but I am not sure what it means. Is this the work of a virus of some sort, or is it just a matter of re-configuring my internet connection somehow?
