First off, im not a computer kind of guy so i dont know the technical names for everything.

So yea, I was watching a show online, and then i received a notification that my computer had found a virus. About ten or so seconds later, my computer showed a blue screen and shut down. From that point on, as described by the title, my internet only works in safe mode (with networking).

The thing is that Google Earth and Skype work (i can video/text chat) in normal mode, but online game servers, Mozilla and IE7 don't work.

I have already done the msconfig with the checking/unchecking of the boxes, and nothing helped.

I scanned using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it got rid of some trojans and other tracking cookies, but that didn't help with the internet issue, although it did get rid of Window's Police Pro which was annoying.

In normal mode, when i go to open firefox or IE, it seems to be loading the webpage (bottom left of the bottom loading bar shows the website's url loading), but then suddenly shows a page error.

Not exactly sure what to do now. I've done about all my inexperienced self can do on my own, so i ask for your assistance.

Thank you muchly

Hey iamclifford; welcome to G2G :)

As you have noted, the most likely cause of your issue will be some form of software interference. Often times it may even be 'security software'. For this reason, we need to see what's running on your machine.

Step 1 - Generate a startup and uninstall list:
Please download HijackThis (if you do not already have it) and install it -- once it is installed, restart your computer; ensure you start your computer in 'normal' mode. Once the computer starts up, launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

Hey iamclifford,

The most likely culprit here is Norton; often times Norton is pre-installed on machines as a trial -- if this is the case for you, then please follow the steps below to remove it and use of one of the free alternatives listed on our site -- here is a list of Free Antivirus and Antispyware Software as recommended by our malware staff, to replace Norton. You may wish to also look at the following thread, as it outlines safe computing practices -- Preventing Malware and Safe Computing.

If Norton is not a trial version and you wish to keep it, you are more than welcome to re-install it after you have removed it. Please follow the steps below to remove Norton from your machine (you may need to download the Norton Removal Tool in Safe Mode with Networking; however pleas ensure you run in whilst in Normal mode).

Step 1 - Remove Norton from your machine:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type control.exe
  • In the new Control Panel window, click on Programs and then Uninstall a program.
  • From the list of applications, please uninstall all applications with Norton or Symantec in their names.
  • After manually removing the Norton applications, download and run the Norton Removal Tool -- once it is finished, restart your computer.
Once your machine boots back up, try to connect to the Internet in normal mode; are you able to?

Thank you very much for your help! I appreciate it.
I like how something that was supposed to help my computer actually made it mess up.
Thank you again!
