Hey everybody,
I'm new to these forums, but after reading around for a while, I thought I ought to become a member. Anyway...

So after about a year or two of using this computer, things got pretty bogged down, so I decided to reformat my hard drive. After reinstalling WinXP Pro, everything seemed to go fine. But as soon as I tried to go on Internet Explorer (to download firefox, i promise) it wouldn't work...which was odd.

I'm on a router which is connected to a cable modem. So, then I checked out control panel>Network and Internet Settings, and then I discovered that I don't even have a connection listed there. I have a IEEE 1394 connection, but no LAN connection. So after trying to create a new connection with the wizard to no avail, I discovered some MS help that didn't really help. I did however affirm that the connection is working, I pinged myself and got 4 replies, but IE still won't connect to anythhing. So I googled the problem and searched tons of different forums, eventually leading me here. I'm usually good with computers, but I'm really stumped. So does anyone have any idea what's wrong?

Does your ethernet NIC show up in device manager and is it working properly? Can you go to control panel and view internet options there? The connection wizzard is pretty simple and should get you going unless you have some kind of hardware or cable problem. You said you can configure a connection but it does not work?
