Labtec mouse stops working

OS: Windows XP
On opening a program, for instance MVP Spades, I click on Games , double click on New but nothing happens. The only way to get started is to click on Ctl, Esc, click on header, Ctl Esc again and then the mouse works until the next time it stops working.
