Hi Geeks,

Appreciate some help here please. My son's laptop is vitually at a standstill. It takes 20-25 mins to boot, he's lost internet connectivity and the 3-fingered salute CTRL-ALT-DEL doesnt' work. I have taken some usual keeping measures: defrag, Ccleaner and disabled most of the non essential start-up programs, but it remains so slow. I cannot update AVG or use an on-line scanner, but the last Spybot S&D and AVG scan did not pick anything up. I am communciating via my desktop and I would like to rule out the possiblity of malware.

Could someone please a look at his HJT log ( all start-ups enabled for this) and let me know if I have a malware problem or not.

Thanks, UnderSiege

Hi, UnderSiege :)

Welcome.

Lets take a deeper look:

Posted ImageDownload Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from here or here to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of both, the main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply.
If the files are too long, attach them to a reply:
  • Scroll down and click the [Manage Attachments] button
  • Browse to the following folder:
    • C:\Deckard\System Scanner
  • Click Upload to upload these files one by one
  • Submit your reply

Hi JSntgRvr

Thanks for picking this up :)

A few problems already - DSS has been running for about 90 minutes now, and it has only backed up about 15% of the registry hives - I'll leave it running overnight.

Please also bear in mind that I am having to communicate with you via my desktop, as the laptop in question refuses to connect to the Internet, so all files have to transferred via memeory stick.

Before I ran DSS, I closed Zone Alarm, Win Patrol, AVG, Photoelements and Channel 4 on Demand, all of which are start-up programs. I hope this was OK.

I'l get back to you tomorrow

regards

Hi, UnderSiege :)

I see no signs of malware. Are you still experiencing the same issues?

Hi JSntgRvr,

I had to transfer orun32.isu via memory stick to upload it to Jotti's Malware Scan. There is no change in laptop performance - still ultra slow; no CTRL-ALT-DEL and no Internet.

Here are the results:

Service load: 0% 100%

Hi, UnderSiege :)

1. Remove Zone Alarm (Completely) from your system.

2. After a restart, run the enclosed batch file. [attachment=19014:Test.zip]

3. Download WinPFind35U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind35u on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of WinpFind35U.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with WinpFind35U or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
    • Place a checkmark on Scan All User Accounts
    • In the Processes group click All
    • In the Services group click All
    • In the Drivers group click All
    • In the Registry group click All
    • In the File String Search group click All
    • In the Rootkit Search group click Yes
    • In the Files Created Within group click 60 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
    • In the Files Modified Within group select 30 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
    • In the Additional scans sections please press select All and uncheck non-microsoft only
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button and attach the notepad file here (Do not copy and paste in a reply, rather attach it to it).

Warning: If you receive an error message while attempting to run WinpFind35U, boot the computer in Safe Mode and attempt to run the program. To boot the computer in Safe Mode, follow these steps:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the WinpFind35U folder and run WinpFind35U.exe

Hi JSntgRvr

I started WinPFind3u OK, but it seems to have hung up on a .bmp file :) I managed to launch Task Manager by right-clicking on the task bar and using the menu command. It shows WinPFind3u running at about 10Mb of RAM and using about 60% of the CPU. But it's been scanning this particular file for over 90 mins now.

Do you want me to reboot into SAFE mode and run it from there, or continue with the current scan ? :)

Hi JSntgRvr,

Something weird happened - when I closed WinPFind3u I got the Program not Responding dialogue box and then.... the WinPFind3u report txt file came up! :)

Anyhow - here is the first attachment from the batch file - the one from the WinPFind3u is 1.59Mb and exceeds the 500kb limit.

[attachment=19028:Report.txt]

Any suggestions how I might get it to you?

Thanks for your perserverance

Concerning Ctrl+Alt+Delete, have you tried typing taskmgr in the run box and click OK? I see no restrictions or malware problems in your computer. Seems more like a Network or Hardware issue. I will ask my colleagues for any advice on this.
