Laptop Hard Drive Problem

I need to access my laptops hard drive. I have connected it to another pc with a cable, however the account is password protected so acces is denied.

If I place the har drive into another laptop of the same make and operating system, will this work?? If so should I attempt a recovery on the that laptop using its own recovery CD's rather than just turning it on.

Please help.
