I have just rewired an outlet in my house to extend my wired network, as the house was prewired with Cat 5e cable. I installed the jack, and connected it to my computer. I used the T568 B model. I hooked it all up, pluged it into my laptop, and got the message... Limited or no connectivity.

I am not sure what to do... as...

A) I know the computer's lan card is ok, b/c I used it at a different location a few days ago.

B) I know the network is working ok, b/c I have computers in other parts of the house are working ok.

C) I also know that the connection is being made, but I am recieving the error under more information tab that I am connected, but that it can't assign a network address to the computer.

D) When I click repair, it tries to renew the ip address, and it always says that it was unable to do so after a few miutes.

E) I have unplugged the cable and restarted the computer a couple of times with no affect.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks,
-Mark Singleton

Maybe there is an adware in your machine, or there is a problem qith the configuration the ip is ok? or the DNS?

Hello Mark,

Could you please clear something up for me:

A) I know the computer's lan card is ok, b/c I used it at a different location a few days ago

Did you use the computer's lan card at a different location, or did you use the computer at a different location? That distinction is very important; thanks :tazz:

Please do the following:

Goto Start, Run, type CMD, press 'OK' and then type: IPCONFIG /ALL - please post the results here by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing Ctrl+C, and then posting on this forum.

Test your Network
1. Goto Start, Run, type: NETSH DIAG GUI - press 'OK'. A Command Prompt window will open temporarily; don't touch it, it will disappear in a moment.
2. A Microsoft Help and Support window will then open; select the option 'Scan your system'.
3. Wait for the scan to finish and then scroll down to the heading 'Modems and Network Adapters'. Look at 'Network Adapters' (don't expand it yet). Beside your connection information, you should see a green 'PASSED'; if you do not (if you see a red 'FAILED') then expand 'Network Adapters', scroll down the list until you see the heading with the 'FAILED', expand that option and copy and paste the results here.
In the NETSH DIAG GUI, you should be looking for any red 'FAILED', however the key one is Network Adapters for you. If you see any other red FAILED, expand the component and copy the results.

Thanks,
Dan.

First of all, thanks for your help Dan.

To answer your question, I used the computer at another location, and the Lan card worked fine.

I am almost certain that this is not a computer problem, but I no longer have a connection via the ethernet cord.

At this point I have a feeling that my problem is with the wiring of the new jack. I did have a connection last night, which stated what I posted previously. It seems the wires must have been loose, because I later lost the connnection all together.

I am trying to rewire the jack now. I had wired a couple of jacks in my house a year or two ago, and never had any problems. The entire house was wired with cat 5e cable, but didn't have ethernet jacks installed. I had forgotten how to wire them. So I checked the other jacks that I had done, and attempted to wire them the same, only I have been running into problems...

I'm going to give it another go... I am attempting to wire a regular telephone outlet, and an ethernet jack off of the same outlet.

I'll keep you posted, thanks again for your help...

Hiya markmes,

First of all, I want to say welcome to you and ardn0001 here at GTG. :)

markmes,

*Did u just update XP to SP2 when this issue started?
*Have you recently checked if the NIC card is still working when connected to a different connection?

Look up here. (Download the patch to fix this bug and reset your TCP/IP settings)

If it works or not, please let us know :)

Belated happy holidays!

I have the same Limited or no connectivity message problem and tested my networked my network and it has failed on DHCPServer and DNSServerSearchOrder.

What should I do?

I may be the only person that caught this, but you said you just REWIRED YOUR CAT 5 jack... did you use a premanufactured cat5 cable that already had the ends on it, did you put your own ends on it, or did you use a modular jack that uses punch down pins. The reason I am asking is that if you didn't use the right color code (should have used the T568A wiring standard instead of the T568B) combinations you will get no/limited connectivity with 10baseT duplexing on your TCP/IP Properties configuration.

I have the same problem connecting, but I am using a line that worked. The old laptop worked fine, now with a new desktop it won't. I ran the diagnostics and got a red flag on the card, it is the same I get when I try to ping the command prompt:
a packet of 100% loss.

When I use ipconfig /all I am missing:
node type, DNS suffix, subnet mask, default gateway, DHP server, DNS servers and lease information.

I am using cable, on a network. The other two computers are fine. When I assign a statip ip: I still can't go online plus whrn using pconfig /all Dhcp is disabled and no Node Type.
