Please help! Any of my MSI files are now showing up with an error "Windows cannot open this file". I tried to hit browse and manually select msiexec.exe from System32 folder, but that just opens the WIndows Installer window with commands listed, etc.

From this website: http://www.windowsit...4612/14612.html - I ran through these steps:

Start a command prompt (Start - Run - cmd.exe)
Type the command: C:\> ftype Msi.Package
If the response is Msi.Package="%SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe" /i "%1" then continue to the next step. ***This is the response I got***
If it is not found type C:\> ftype Msi.Package="%SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe" /i "%1"
Continue to the next step
Type the command: C:\> assoc .msi **Got response: File association not found for extension .msi**
If there is no association (the most normal problem) type:
C:\> assoc .msi=Msi.Package
**Got error: "Error occured while processing: .msi"

Also tried to download a registry fix from http://www.dougknox..../file_assoc.htm and just double click on the file to run it and get this error: "Cannot import \msi1.reg: Error accessing the registry." Not sure if I was doing this wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would try updating the ms installer
http://support.micro....com/?id=893803

then I would try and see if that fixed the issue. if not then try the dougknox fix again.

lastly you can install the microsoft install cleanup utility:
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;290301

to use the utility, after installing it go to start, programs and look for the msi cleanup utility. once launched look for the selected application. highligh and click remove. now you can reinstall the application in question.

also there is a hidden system folder on your pc c:\windows\installer
this is where all the msi files are stored at. if the folder is missing or corrupted then that could also lead to your issues.

Sorry for rezing such an old post but just incase anyone needs help with msi files then a registry fix would help.
To make this short goto regedit "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurentVersion/Explorer/FileExts/.msi"
Under UserChoice folder there should be a string that says Progid just double click on that and the edit string window will pop up and where it says Value data it should say Msi.Package and if not then just type it in the value data box click ok and that should fix it if anyone has any problems with opening msi file extensions.
