Well I am now the temporary owner of a PowerBook G4 (don't know much past that... 15" screen, i guess). I got it for a friend of mine who recently got her laptop stolen. According to "About This Mac", I'm running OS X 10.5 (Leopard?) on a 1.25 GHz G4 processor with 1 GB of RAM.
Now for the question - I have noticed that this computer takes a while to boot up and get to the login screen (I haven't set it to login automatically for benchmarking purposes). Given the information, is this normal? Also, is there any program you other Mac users would recommend for keeping the computer clean and quick (like the Piriform tools for Windows)? Thanks for your help! The sooner I can get this up to snuff, the sooner I can get back to my Vista! |

There's probably nothing wrong with it, and I sort of doubt it's bogged down by clutter or malware, especially since it obviously went through an OS upgrade recently. It's just an old computer. It's pretty slow, man, especially to be running a new OS like leopard. |

I am also running a powerbook g4 and love it, but you should be aware that computer may be five years old... any computer gets a little slow after that amount of time... just try one of the new macbooks at an apple store. They are screaming.

No that's normal. I noticed that Leopard (yes, you were correct) took quite a bit longer to boot up on my iMac than did Tiger. If I was able to notice the speed decrease on my Intel Core 2 Duo, then I'm certain it's even slower on a PowerPC processor.
My only recommendation is AppTrap, it's freeware and what it does is remove all the system files after you uninstall a program (by dragging and dropping it into the Trash). so romeo, are you suggesting that I downgrade to Tiger? I even still have Jaguar.... What would I be missing if I did go back to Tiger?
