Hi Ian,

and voila! It worked like magic. And WMP is fully functional

I'm glad we got that figured out... I was running low on suggestions smile.gif

One last dumb question: my printer is showing as "offline" in the control panel? How do I make it online and work again?

What kind of printer is it? Is the physical printer saying offline, or just Windows? Have you tried unplugging both the power and the USB or Parallel printer cable and plugging back in?

Hi BHowett

Oh, you replied too quickly this time - I switched off and booted up and you have had more success - the icon titles on the desktop have gone back to normal. It just needed a reboot after the last procedure. I was about to tell you this when I saw you'd replied before I got a chance to do so. Thanks yet again.

The printer is a little HP deskjet 3940 - about as low spec as these things go. The printer seems happy enough and will accept paper etc, but Windows, under "Control Panel/Printers & Faxes" says it is offline. I'd never asked it to be offline, now I can't ask it to be online, and believe me, I've begged it, asked it nicely, talked harshly to it, etc! surrender.gif

The work you've done on my co,mputer makes me realise just how little I know about the machine that occupies so much of my free time. I need to learn to do this stuff a little more.

With further thanks thumbsup.gif

Ian

Hi Ian,

It sounds like a communication problem, so lets do the following
  • disconnect USB cable
  • go to START > RUN and type in services.msc
  • find/scroll down to print spool, and right click on it
  • then choose restart.

let me know if that works thumbsup.gif

Dear Bhowett

Apologies that it has taken me so long to get around to replying. It has been a very busy week.
Thank you yet again - the printer is now working and that clears up all the difficulties.
What can I say? Many many many thanks for the attention. I will make a donation to Geeks, and all I can say is, your service is amazing.
With sincere thanks
Ian

Hi Ian,

Well done, I glad we got everything running good thumbsup.gif All I have now are some clean up and tips to keep you safe.

Now lets uninstall Combofix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /u, it needs to be there.

===============================================

Click Here to download OTC
Double-click OTC.exe to run it.
Click the Clean up button
Click Yes to the reboot.

Now delete any logs that you have left over on your desktop.

===============================================

For some useful tips on staying clean, along with links to some freeware to help, have a look at this page.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place, you can read this article.

===============================================

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks for letting us help you!
