I am new to this site and green with computers. I have an HP Pavillion that is doing two things at this time that concern me. irst The message " Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host has stopped working A problem caused the program..." This messag comes up every minut or so and I endup minimizing to the bottom. If I close one another on pops up immediately. I have searched for over a month for a solution and have even attempted one solution that I found but it did not work. This is annoying and it may be connected to the next problem that just started yesterday. My computer starts clicking and then after the clicking has stopped, immediately the computer goes into a freeze, with nothing left to do but power down. (task manager does nt work when that happens) Can any one help? or point me in the right direction. - David :)

I have been to this websit but the error message says "Microsoft Windows Search Indexer stopped working..." this is not the same in words;"Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host" Protocol Host v. Indexer.

Index Servicing - I have not disabled so I am sure it is running. How can I be sure.

1. Click on Start button, then select Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools, and double click on Services applet. Alternatively, simply type “Services” (without quotes) in Start Search box.
2. If User Account Control asks for permission, click Continue.
3. Locate an service named Windows Search. Right click on Windows Search, and then select Properties on contextual menu.
4. Click on Stop button to stop the indexing service immediately.
5. On the Startup Type dropdown box, select Disabled.
6. Click on OK button.

Hello Broni, Thank you for your response. I followed your instructions and when I pushed the "stop" in service properties, an error(trianlge w/!) whichstated Windows SEarch service on Local computer. The service di not return an error. THis could be an internal Windows error or an internal service error. If the problem persists contanct your administrator. I did finish all of your instuction after exiting the error box. and so far I have not had the Service Protocol error come back. That is a very good sign and I am very greatful for your help. Thank you very much. David :)

You're welcome :)
As long as the error has stopped, we won't worry about details.
Indexing service is a real hog and basically it should be disabled.
