If you have already had your system fixed, please respond here and let us know. If not follow the instructions below.

Lets start out with some general scans and see if we cant clean things up a little.

+++++ Step 1 +++++

Please download Ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install Ewido security suite
• Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

Update HiJackThis

• Open HiJackThis
• Click Open the Misc Tools Section
• Click Check for update online

+++++ Step 4 +++++

After that, I will need to see two different logs from HiJackThis. The first is the normal log like you posted here. To get the other one, follow these directions.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post back with those logs and we can continue from there.

Hi Tom and thanks for taking the time to reply.

Since I first posted this problem, I realised that the "phone line not connected..." popup was a genuine Windows response to the fact that the "virus" (if that is what it is/was) was continually resetting my dial-up settings so that, among other things, the software was looking to connect via the PC's internal modem - which is not in fact plugged into the phone line!

Ok but, every time I changed this setting to use my USB modem and retyped my userid and password, it got changed back within a few seconds. The really odd bit is that I got so fed up with this situation that I just kept banging in the data repeatedly and hitting "OK" (knowing of course this was a pointless exericise) when, for no apparent reason, something changed. The connection held, the settings did not get cleared and, in fact, when I looked into it, they had gone back to exactly what they originally were - cosmetic difference only but not exactly what I had been retyping.

Several days later, there has been no recurrence of the problem. First thing I did was download the free software your site advises and AVG did come up with 10 things it classed as Trojans or Viruses. Don't know for sure but maybe that has taken the infection responsible off my machine.

I don't know whether you would recommend still carrying out the aditional steps you have suggested - I have avoided downloading Ewido so far because I thought I might have greater need for the 14 day free trial some time in future!

I have posted this update in the hope that it may prove useful to others and maybe you will be able to tell me even approximately what may have happened. This episode has been useful to me in making me a lot more security aware but also I have been amazed at the amount of help there is out there on the Net so I'd just like to pass on my appreciation for your great work.

Hello. You are still showing some traces of a trojan on your system. Please try the steps below to remove it.

[*]Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Run HiJackThis and do a scan.

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HDAudio Driver 1.0] C:\WINDOWS\system32\xetlmitg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HDAudio Driver 2.0] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pbibm.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.


Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xetlmitg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pbibm.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hi again Tom,

I've followed your instructions except that the first item you wanted me to fix (xetlmitg.exe) was no longer listed by hijackthis nor was it in the system32 folder. I think I remember that this was one of the files got rid of by one of the anti-virus/trojan programs I ran since the last hijack log. The other one was still there though and I have got rid of it as you directed.

There was also a data file (which I have not deleted) with the same name as each of these applications also in the system32 folder. Windows recognised the file extension as belonging to a MOBv2 Set Data item. I know I have MOB (My Own Backup) software on the PC and use it for my regular backups, though not on the date 10.7.05 that these files were created nor would I expect the application to put its data in that folder. I am giving this information hoping you can confirm that the MOB software is safe to use or otherwise?

I think it was one of the trojans that ewido found.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
