Howdy,

First, thanks for the forum and all who spend their time helping out.

After returning from a business trip, my PC was infection with virtumonde/vundo malware, which had opened the door to other malware being installed as well. My two daughters use AIM and download who knows what, so that is the probable source of the infection. I have cautioned them, and may have to stop that activity all together.

Anyway, after proceeding through the Malware FAQ steps twice, I still find a persistent problem when logging into windows as any user (i.e., after windows has booted at we're at the user icons screen) of
(c:\WINDOWS\system32\jjvtfnkr.dll -- specific module cannot be found). This was part of the original infection.
Looking at the hijackthis log below, it seems there may be some other components also not fully removed. Finally, I run Spybot resident (TeaTimer), and some program(s) are trying to change browser settings. I can deny these, but they will keep trying to infinity until allowed.

If someone would be kind enough to make suggestions, I'd appreciate it. The Geeks-to-Go Malware FAQ
got the PC running in top shape after the first run through, but the persistent programs eventually bogged
it back down in the following two weeks such that I just ran through the FAQ steps again. Like the first time, the
PC is running great, but the persistent malware is still in place. I know we should be running Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, and we'll switch as soon as we have a clean system (unless switching before clean would help).

Here are the system specs:
Dell Dimension 3000
Windows XP Home 5.1.2600 SP2
Windows Firewall
McAfee Security Center 8.0.239
McAfee VirusScan 12.0.172
Spybot
Lavasoft Adaware
Internet Explorer 6.0

and since infection:
SuperAntiSpyware
AVG Anti-Spyware
ATF Cleaner
Pandasoft ActiveScan (via the web)

The relevant logs are below.

Thanks,
Slider

Hi jzeitler and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Now with both Spybot and Tea Timer shut down:
    • Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
    • Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer

B. Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  1. Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  2. Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3A105841-832C-4CED-AA10-9E450164B04D} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {71DFF0F9-B821-424C-8893-5EEC45F98865} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D2F09B8C-5DA7-42CC-A6C8-F26DB338671B} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {917623D1-D8E5-11D2-BE8B-00104B06BDE3} -
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyvtr - C:\WINDOWS\
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtstt - C:\WINDOWS\
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winrkp32 - C:\WINDOWS\
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: xxyxwtt - C:\WINDOWS\

  3. Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  4. Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files, and DELETE them (if still present):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ppqss.bak2<==File
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ppqss.bak1<==File

  5. Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  6. Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Trevuren,

Ok, ran the latest steps and didn't get the error prompt for jjvtfnkr.dll @ startup (good).
The HJT log AFTER fixing the checked items is below.

Many thanks for the quick and continuing responses.

Now let's make sure that there are no more "baddies" lurking:

Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        Extended
    • Scan Options:
        Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

Using Windows Explorer, please DELETE the following files:

C:\virus_scan_recovery\backups\backup-20070704-104918-157.dll
C:\virus_scan_recovery\backups\backup-20070704-105529-734.dll
C:\virus_scan_recovery\backups\backup-20070704-111646-738.dll
C:\virus_scan_recovery\backups\backup-20070704-111920-295.dll

If you can not delethen them in Normal Windows Mode, delete them in Safe Mode.

After this is done, please tell me how your system is running. If everything is OK, just give me the go ahead and we will proceed with the final cleanup procedures.

Trevuren,

Those files are now deleted. The system is running great, but
there still is one problem left I can tell. When logging into
Windows under my daughter Zoe's username, I get an
Windows Pop-up Error that it cannot find:
c:\DOCUMEN~1\Zoe\LOCALS~1\Temp\muwkifsg.dll

I ran HJT again and posted the log below if that helps.

Thanks,
jzeitler

I reviewed all the logs and none of them mention anything to do with that name or even that file. This usually occurs from an incomplete removal of a startup item and could be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Let's checka long list of startup areas. We may get lucky.

  • Download Silent runners by Andrew Aronoff from here
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on Silent Runners.vbs to start Silent runners
  • If your antivirus warns you about a script, allow it to run, this script does not contain malicious code
  • You will be asked if you want skip the supplementary search, click Yes
  • Wait for Silent runners to inform you that it has finished
  • A log will be created in the same folder as Silent Runners.vbs
  • It will have a name of Startup Programs (yourusername) date-time.txt
  • Use notepad to open that file
  • Copy and paste the contents as a reply to this topic

I did not find anything there so let us try this :

1. Download "Registry Search Tool" (RegSrch.vbs) from HERE to your desktop

2. Start the program by clicking on its icon and paste in the following string: muwkifsg.dll.

3. Wait for it to complete the search, click ok at the prompt.

4. Then when wordpad opens, copy/paste the text as a reply into this thread.

Regards,

Trevuren

Trevuren,

I ran Registry Search Tool, but no instances of
muwkifsg.dll were found and no log file was generated.

Thanks,

We will try another powerful scanner:

Download RegLooks.
Save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick on reglooks.exe and wait until a logfile appears.
The log will be called result.txt.
