Hello-

Ive went through the guide provided, following every step and finally Im here. Upon doing the Malwarebytes scan, it found two infections, to which I removed. Followed by doing the Windows update, then rebooted. And still the problem persists. =\ The following is generally what happens:

Start up the system, it runs very slowly(mind you my PC isnt that new, but I can tell the difference)
I use Firefox while web browsing and sometimes the sites take forever to load or more importantly I get the "Not Responding" issue for a few minutes then it suddenly kicks in and starts working.
While browsing the internet I get the pop-up stating that windows is increasing my virtual memory as it is low, the thing is this happens all the time, sometimes even when the PC is sitting idle.
If I leave the PC idle for any amount over a few minutes, its like the system freezes for a moment before it actually does anything.
Lastly over the past two nights, my PC has completely froze up, nothing works...mouse,ctrl+alt+Del, Nothing. So Ive had to completely restart my computer.

The following is my Malwarebytes log:

Hello Becky715,

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later. This will especially help you when your computer is off line.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Hello Becky715,

Firstly in this post, please go to Start > Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs (Programs and Features if you are a Vista user) and uninstall the following if they exist:

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.:

Viewpoint Manager is considered to be foistware. You can go to the link below to read about it.

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

Now

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

NOTE: If you are guest watching this topic. ComboFix is a very powerful tool. The disclaimer clearly states that you should not use it without supervision. There is good reason for this as ComboFix can, and sometimes does, run into conflict on a computer and render it unusable.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello Becky715,

Firstly: Please disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

Now

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HiJackThis.

Kaspersky on line scanner is very thorough. It can take a long time and for periods may seem not to be working. Just be patient and let it do its job.

Kaspersky works with Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: you will need to turn off your security programs to allow Kaspersky to do its job.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Copy and paste that information in your next post together with a new HijackThis log.

Start up entries pointing to two different registry entries. Just a waste of resource in my view. It is an area that some malware disguise themselves as too, although my feeling is that they are legit here.

We can remove them if you like. You can still open MySpace when you click on it...just not automatically started every time you start your computer.Tell me at next post!

Now

You have used Malwarebytes before. If you still have it on your machine please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you no-longer have Malwarebytes please download from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

So when you come back please post
  • MBAM report
  • tell me about those MySpace entries
  • and also tell me how your machine is performing now

As for how my PC is performing...Lots better...I cant say its completely back to normal because Ive gotten the "Not Responding" a few more times while trying to open the Malwarebytes scanner =\ But other than that all seems good now...no more "virtual memory" pop-ups.

Another quick question, should I completely update my Spybot program? As I seen theres a newer edition out.
Also, during the first Malwarebytes scan I removed a "hosts" file, that Im fairly certain my MSN Live Messenger uses....So should I not use MSN Live Messenger anymore?

Yes, once you are finished here. Good idea to keep it updated. Spybot does give very good protection in some areas.

Also, during the first Malwarebytes scan I removed a "hosts" file, that Im fairly certain my MSN Live Messenger uses....So should I not use MSN Live Messenger anymore?

No, if you enjoy using MSN Live Messenger, just keep on using it. Are you sure Malwarebytes has changed anything? I would be surprised. Try MSN and tell me if we need to look at a problem there. More likely MBAM was just removing a bad bit.

Now

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [MySpaceIM] C:\Program Files\MySpace\IM\MySpaceIM.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [MySpaceIM] C:\Program Files\MySpace\IM\MySpaceIM.exe (User 'Default user')

Close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HiJackThis.

In the next post we will remove the tools we have been using. But for now, just run the HijackThis fix and post back a new HijackThis log.

Also tell me it there is a problem with your MSN.

MSN Messenger seems to be working fine again now =) Thank you!

One more quick question if I may, when I went to reopen Firefox so I could reply this, the browser opened, but immediately I got the "Not Responding" thing for a moment, then it kicked in and I was able to get here...should this be doing this, more so this is probably something other than Malware/Virus right?

Hello again Becky715,

should this be doing this, more so this is probably something other than Malware/Virus right?

I don't think it is malware, your machine looks clean to me.

After you have finished you might post in the XP Tech forum here and see if someone knows the answer. If you do open a topic there tell them that you have been here and provide them with a link to this topic.

For what it is worth here are a couple of thoughts I have had. They may be completely wrong and the tech guys will be able to tell you about that but here they are:

Your security programs might be delaying Firefox and hence you get the message.

Do you have it set up as your default browser?

I have my Firefox set so that it removes all cookies and clears cache when it closes. This is a good security action but it does mean that my Firefox takes a while to start up and while I don't get a message about not responding (mine is a beta version and might not give a message if it is delayed) maybe if yours is set up like this it might be generating that message.

Okay then, time to clear away the tools we have been using.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.Posted Image

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and some tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

After that please go here to download OTCleanIt.

Run this program to remove the remaining tools we have been using.

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep. Erunt can also be uninstalled via the add/remove programs utility, for some though, it may be a useful backup program to hold on to. HijackThis can be uninstalled via the Add or Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel.

A reminder now: Remember to turn back on any anti-malware programs you may have turned off during the cleaning process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up blocker (Note: this as an added benefit!) that I have seen. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

Firefox may be downloaded from Here

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Startuplite is a tool to help you stop some programs not needed when you start your computer from loading. They will begin automatically only when needed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
