Hello elfu and welcome to Geeks to Go
As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible. Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix. Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep. I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder! Click My Computer, then C:\ and then Program Files. In the menu bar, go to File>New>Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can right-click on and rename to HJT or HijackThis. Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Cut ‘n’ Paste your HijackThis.exe into it. To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop: Killbox by Option^Explicit CCleaner Ewido Security Suite AntiPuper Open AntiPuper by secured2k, and follow the on-screen instructions to sweep your PC for infections. When it has finished it will save a log to the desktop. Please post it in your reply. Install Ewido Security Suite.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following: 1) Restart your computer 2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8. 3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear 4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode. For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: Safe Mode Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below. R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpySheriff] C:\Program Files\SpySheriff\SpySheriff.exe Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\SpySheriff\SpySheriff.exe
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again. There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (3 logs) |

hi Crustyolebloke(that's a cool name! LOL)
Yes, there are multiple names on my PC. This is how the PC's in my house is set up. We have 3 PC's and 1 MAC networking plus a Laser Printer. 2 PC's and 1 MAC is networked directly through Ethernet while the Laptop is connected WiFi. The laser printer is connected Ethernet as well. On the Laptop and THIS PC that I am using. There are two account names(one for me and one for the misses, both with Admin rights) and one for guest. The other PC is used by my mother and it is an very old PC with a simple anti-virus and anti-spy stuff on it. All PC's have Windows XP and are all updated with firewall One of the things I am afraid of is having the viruses/malware being passed back and forth even with the firewall. Should I do what you suggested to all three PC's even though this one I am using IS the one that has the malware? I apologize for all the trouble, YIKES...but thanks sooooo much for replying. Am at my wits end here. BTW, ever since I've got the spysheriff and other stuff. Everytime I would start my computer, a tiny black (I think it is DOS window) would pop up for a split second and then disappear again. Either way, thanks once again, I really do appreciate it! I will go and try this out now and post a new log as soon as I am able to. Thanks a bunch!!! This post has been edited by elfu: Dec 20 2005, 07:03 PM |

hi there, real quick question.
I have downloaded anti-puper. However, it says that I need McAfee to clean. I don't have McAfee but Grisoft(AVG). It looks like I won't be able to use Antipuper. I am going to try Ewido and other ways and post log. Thanks |

a couple of things, ole bloke sir:
1)When I was using Killbox, the direction you gave me was "Go to Options>Delete on Reboot?Process ALL in list. This was not under my options And I had to type in the programs. NEVERTHELESS, I think it did its job. My puter is fast like I just got it years ago. Thanks a bunch once again. If you don't mind taking a look at my log and tell me if I need to do anything else. I'd greatly appreciate it. Have a happy holidays and something is on its way to you. Excelsior! |

Hello again
Firstly may I thank you for your generosity. QUOTE hi Crustyolebloke(that's a cool name! LOL) So is yours Edmund.I'll try to answer as many of your questions raised that I can. You don't have to use McAfee, AVG is fine. Networking can spread malware so protect all PC's (Mac's should be OK) that have shared ports/folders. Killbox was recently updated, but it looks like we are back to using the older version for some unknown reason. The principle is the same however. The HJT log you post is incomplete without its header. I can't tell when it was created, but I'll guess that it was after the fix. There is an adjustment to make to it, which is being blocked from happening by both Ewido Guard and SpyWare Doctor (please read again the set-up for Ewido). If you can disable both of those programmes, then this adjustment fix will then work. Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis. I now require a fresh HJT log from each user with their own logon from the PC's. Please name them to save any confusion. Ensure they are created in normal mode and just paste them into this thread in one post. Also, please note that the rule for antispyware programmes is: Only one programme to run in real-time; two or more will cause conflicts and slowdown. All others to be used for on-demand scanning only. QUOTE There are two account names(one for me and one for the misses, both with Admin rights) and one for guest. Please modify this to be one logon with administrator's rights, all others to have limited accounts. Phew! I must have a lie down for a while! |

you're welcome, sir. It was my pleasure for that you've helped me.
I've unloaded Spyware Doctor and fixed the paths that you've told me to and it all seems fixed. May I ask few more questions. And I hope I am not taxing you. 1) The paths you've asked me to fix. How do you know that they are spyware/malwares? Are they disquised as "yahoo" search bars? 2) On the other puters that are in the house. How should I have them protected? By installing EWIDO and one more other anti-spy/malware program plus the firewall?? 3) this is question is probably something you don't want to answer. LOL But how do I know which is malware/spyware when I am looking at the hijack file?Just curious. Once again, I really appreciate your help. And here is my latest log of hijack this: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 11:02:08 PM, on 12/21/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgemc.exe C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoctrl.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lanovation\PrismXL\PRISMXL.SYS C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\NCS\PROSet\PRONoMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe C:\Program Files\Gateway Utilities\GWInkMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnf.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YPager.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ymsgr_tray.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE C:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster\spywareblaster.exe C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.netscape.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.gatewaybiz.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.netscape.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.gatewaybiz.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1 O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Congratulations! your new log is clean.
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.) To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. (Windows XP) 1. Turn off System Restore.
Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore.
Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK. I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean: SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer. FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser. AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one. ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall). Remember to update these frequently. Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness. You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer. Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. QUOTE 1) The paths you've asked me to fix. How do you know that they are spyware/malwares? Are they disquised as "yahoo" search bars? 2) On the other puters that are in the house. LOL But how do I know which is malware/spyware when I am looking at the hijack file?Just curious. Answers 1) Yes, malware writers try to disguise their scum so that it looks legitimate 2) Yes, but please bear in mind that Ewido is a 14-day trial and then you have to buy it if you want auto updates to continue. 3) Well it's something you have to learn; there is no magical short-cut. This might help you: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/htlogtutorial.html I wish you and your family, happy safe surfing! |
