Hi roadrunner05 and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. You are currently running HijackThis from a Temporary folder. HJT needs to be in a folder of it's own so that the program itself and the backups it creates aren't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder HijackThis.

B. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

C. Close ALL windows except HJT

D. SCAN with HJT

E. POST a new log

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi roadrunner05,

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi roadrunner05,

McAfee was erroneously identifying HJT as malware a couple of weeks ago. They have since come out with a patch to rectify the problem.

I suggest that you go to the McAfee site and have your software updated. It was a real problem for a lot of people until they fixed it.

Hi roadrunner05,

I missed the fact that apparently you are running 2 AVs at the same time, McAfee and AVG. Please note that it is highly recommended that you disable/uninstall one of them because it often causes major system problems.

Hi roadrunner05,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1) Disable or uninstall WinPatrol because theycould interfere with the fix.

2)Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
.Place a check mark beside the following items:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINNT\system32\Userinit.exe
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and delete it (if it is present):

C:\WINNT\system32\Userinit.exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally,RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Travuren,
I have a major problem. I did as you told me
Diabled Win Patrol
Unchecked "hide protected operating system files
Ran Hijackthis
checked marked the files you told me and cliked the FIX CHECKED button
Rebooted my computer in Safe mode
Using Windows Exployer I deleted C:\WINNT\system32\USERINIT.EXE
Rebooted in Normal Mode.

But my computer never was able to Log on ,it would do the following
Windows is starting up
Preparing Network connections

It would show for a second. Log on window
but the window was gray
Name: Administrator
Password:

Loading personal settings
Applying personal settings
Saving personal setting
then it would start all over again several times (enless loop) with windows is starting up and not log on.

What can I do?

FYi ,

Thanks for any assistance

Hi roadrunner05,

Are you able to start up in Safe Mode?

If yes, use System Restore to get back to close to where you were before the glitch.

Go Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore and follow the prompts.

Choose a restore point when you know all was well with the logon.

Please get back to me

Hi roadrunner05,

I hope you have your original retail or OEM version of Windows XP.

If so, look here:( I got it off the net. Not sure if it will work in your case but worth a try).

"The recovery console is available from booting from a retail or OEM version of Windows XP (Restore discs don`t count).

You can install the Recovery console by running from the XP CD:
d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

If you have a FAT32 volume, any normal DOS or Win98 boot disk will do.
If you have NTFS then you need to boot from a utility to give you r/w access to your C: drive.

To replace userinit.exe:
1. Boot using Recovery console (or other cmd prompt with access to C: drive)
2. CD Windows\System32
3. Expand d:\i386\userinit.ex_ userinit.exe (or Copy d:\i386\userinit.ex_ userinit.exe) where d: is CDROM drive and need to expand compressed file to full file.
4. type Exit to reboot "

Travuren,
I do not have the originial retail or OEM verision of Windows 2000. I do have NTFS .
I purchased my computer from work and the computer was preinstalled with Windows 2000. Is there another way to access the c: drive manually?
What should I do?
Roadrunner
FYI I have been using my computer at work to E-mail you. I will not be able to respond until tomorrow.
Thanks,

Hi roadrunner05,

If they were selling them at work then someone has to have an OEM version of the Operating System. Try to check the agency at work through which you purchased your computer. They HAVE to have a system recovery module,
