I've been having some issues with my desktop recently, and have been trying over the last few days to fix it with the help of rshaffer61. We've tried several things to fix what I thought was a corrupted Explorer.exe. However everything we've tried hasn't worked. (you can see the thread here)

Anyways, after trying to replace the corrupted Explorer.exe with a new version from the Windows XP CD, I was still unable to run Windows. However, this time I got extra error messages. I got the following:

logonui.exe - Application Error
Rundll.exe - Visual C++ Runtime Library Error
Explorer.exe - Visual C++ Runtime Library Error

After posting this, rshaffer61 concluded that it was a virus or malware of some sort that was causing my problem and suggested I post here to get help. He also thought that this infection resembles a virus that he's dealt with before called virut. Apparently, the only way to get rid of virut is to do a complete format and re-install of Windows.

The only problem is that I don't have a backup of my data that is on this hard drive, and I'd like to be able to recover it before any formatting is involved.

Also, I can't boot into Windows for very long without it crashing, so I was unable to run MalwareByte.

Is there anything I can do?
