I have looked at the other threads dealing with the DrWatson problem but nothing applies to my case, at least not completely.

While browsing the internet, I clicked on an internal link from within the website (that I have visited many times before without this occuring) and got a popup saying "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" so I clicked ok, and immediately following that got another pop-up saying "Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close", so I closed that as well and sent error reports to microsoft. Another pop-up with the "internet explorer" error follow, and I closed that as well. The screens were frozen for a few seconds so I right-clicked on the buttons in the task bar and closed out that way; internet explorer had not been responding, so I click on the "end now" button.

I restarted my computer and visited the same site, no problem. I am not noticing any odd symptoms, and hope that there aren't any. But to be on the safe side, here is my HJT log. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me if there is something wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Hi CelestialTeardrop

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS01
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use). Click Here
QUOTE
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox.
http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .
You can download Sun's newer JVM for Windows at http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats.

Thank you so much for your help!

I just have a few questions:

1. Will any data CDs that I made while my computer was infected still carry the malware and possible transfter it back my computer, or another computer?

2. Are all of the programs that you suggested for download compatible with Norton Internet Security 2004 (Anti-Virus, firewall, pop-up blocking, ad-blocking)? I know Spybot Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware are, because I have had them for some time, and I saw that ewido is as well from their website, though I do not know about the others (WinPatrol free, Spyware Blaster, etc...)

3. What should I do with the "backups" folder created by HiJackThis?

4. Is this file, from the HiJackThis log, harmful:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
and what is it?

Thanks again.

Hi CelestialTeardrop

1. Will any data CDs that I made while my computer was infected still carry the malware and possible transfter it back my computer, or another computer?
You will need to check them with your Anti-virus program.

2. Are all of the programs that you suggested for download compatible with Norton Internet Security 2004 (Anti-Virus, firewall, pop-up blocking, ad-blocking)? I know Spybot Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware are, because I have had them for some time, and I saw that ewido is as well from their website, though I do not know about the others (WinPatrol free, Spyware Blaster, etc...) Yes.

3. What should I do with the "backups" folder created by HiJackThis? Delete them from your system also any backups that Norton has made.

4. Is this file, from the HiJackThis log, harmful:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
and what is it? Microsoft Money.

Be safe
