Hi Keith,

We'll try the basics first

If you right click the taskbar then properties then start menu then customize then advanced, do you have a tick in search?

Then try this next

Start > run
type sfc /scannow

If that doesn't work try this KB from Microsoft

Possible fix 1

If that one doesn't sort it here is another KB from Microsoft

Possible fix 2
if still no luck come back to me and we'll look further

Thanks for your reply. A couple of things. This morning when I booted up, I found the little search tool functioning. However it booted to a weired fuzzy mode so I rebooted. When I shut down there were four programs that were trying to shut down and asked if I wanted to end now and if I did I would lose data. These are four programs that are unfamiliar to me. I wanted to go to task manager and see what programs were running but my task manager is messed up. When I press control alt delete, normally a window would open that gives you a few options: lock the computer, task manager, shut down etc. I received not such options. I immediately got the task manager but the various options are missing such as programs running applications running, cpu usage etc...

Any idea what is wrong?

Thanks,

Keith

I ran sfc /scannow but it asked for a disc that I don't have. My search bar is working and I did receive some advice on how to restore my task manager to the view I had previously. What I don't know how to do is get my Windows Security Window back.

Normally when you press control, alt, delete, you get a window that says windows security and it gives you the following tabs: Lock Computer, logg off, shutdown, change password, task manager and cancel. I don't have that anymore.

Any advice.

Thanks,

Keith

The only disc that it asks for is your windows XP installation disc that should have been supplied by your vendor. IF you do not have that disc then you would be unable to carry out my suggestion of a system repair.

If you are now receiving help from the applications or win xp forums, they are the boys to ask, as i am the malware removal specialist.

As your log shows no sign of any infection i will have to close this topic

I really appreciate all of your help getting my computer cleaned up. I didn't mean to suck you into something that isn't your area.

One more question though. I do have the disc you are referring to. Do I put it in at the prompt? And will it give me directions on what to do from there.

Thanks,

Keith

Hi keith,

Yes if you put the disc in, when you run sfc... it checks system files off your disc and if they do not match up it will change to default. You just follow all prompts.

Regards,
