Hi!

Every now and then, at random times - sometimes when I'm not even doing anything other than reading a document - Rundll32.exe will jump up to 100% CPU usage for 15-20 minutes at a time. Actually, it doesn't hit exactly 100% usage if there are other programs open, but it takes up any percentage not being used, so that total CPU usage is at 100%. After 15-20 minutes the system will return to normal.

I've run (fully updated) Adware, Norton, and Spybot in Regular and Safe Mode - nothing found. I can't seem to figure out what's the problem.

I've read about similar problems with the VX2.BetterInternet virus, but I downloaded and ran VX2Finder - nothing found.

I'm really at a loss and this bug seriously slows down my comp at the worst times. Any help would be awesome.

I've pasted a HijackThis log below that I recently ran. I ran it when the computer was working fine - i.e., rundll32 was at a low CPU usage. Should I also do a new log while it's up at 100%?

Thank you!
Farzad

Hello fsamimi and welcome to the site!

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://home.netscape.../7_1/home.html"); (C:\Documents and Settings\Farzad Samimi\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\2f3rej2c.slt\prefs.js)
N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", ""); (C:\Documents and Settings\Farzad Samimi\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\2f3rej2c.slt\prefs.js)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BMMGAG] RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\pwrmonit.dll,StartPwrMonitor

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

Thank you for helping me with this! I followed the instructions you gave (close all windows, fix the 3 lines in HijackThis you mentioned, and reboot). Below, I've pasted the HijackThis log I made immediately after the fixes. I only did this a few minutes ago, so enough time hasn't passed to see if it worked. I'll wait a couple days to see what happens. Thanks!!

Hi Ditto,

Thanks so much! I have no idea what you had me do, but it seems to have worked. I haven't had any problems for over a week now.

Just out of curiosity, what were those lines that I "fixed" in HijackThis?

Thanks!

Hey Farzad,

The N3 entries are Netscape/Mozilla Start/Search page URLs and the 04 entry is an autoloading program. The 04 entry that you fixed contained the rundll32 program that was at high CPU
