I have cleaned up my registry using "Registry Mechanic", but when I re-boot now I get a message saying that "can't locate the SHLDDRV.VXD file" that the sysini is pointing to. What is this file for, and can I fix this?

The file referred to is probably a 'leftover' from an antivirus program you no longer use (Macafee?). The file has gone but the system is still trying to load it into memory by means of an entry in the SYSTEM.INI file. Open SYSTEM.INI (I think it's in C:\Windows) in Notepad. Look through it for any line which contains SHLDDRV.VXD and delete the whole of that line. Then SAVE the file, close notepad and re-boot.
