It would be nice to run the various scans and stuff but the laptop I am dealing with just shuts down.....

It will start with CMD prompt but not safe mode or last good etc.

Google is normally my friend but no good so far.

What do I need to do in CMD promt? Tried shutdown -a as advised but getting nowhere.......

Heck I really thought I was getting somewhere with viruses but this one is setting me back.

Can't do run/cmd/shutdown as not enough time (60s) and start button doesnt appear/toolbar hidden.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Updated:

Finally got it to run in safe mode

All Scans (Adaware/Ewido and McAfee) abort part way through causing a system shutdown without any error messages.

HJT Log attached (sorry it's not yet in own folder - for some reason I can't get a copy off the disc)

I have also figured out how to get it to run in normal mode but this is only successful about 1 in 3 times......

FXSasser in safe mode finds nothing but this is the shutdown message on startup.

As I said I thought I was getting somewhere with viruses but this is way beyond my newfound skills :) :) I've highlighted what I think are suspect entries and plan to remove the associated programs.

And no it's not my computer :tazz: and yes I will uninstall the P2P software just as soon as I can get control panal (add/remove) working :)

Thanks,

Tony

Welcome to GeeksToGo th3

My name is MasterJ and I will be helping you with your problem.

As you can see we are very busy here. Sorry for the delay. Could you try to get a HijackThis log from Normal Mode? If not, just let me know, and we'll get started.

Master J,

Many thanks for your response and assistance :tazz:

Yes I can now run HJT in safe - albeit from a USB Flash drive - and this is attached as requested.

Other steps I have tried:
  • Installed the MS Patch for Sasser KB890830
  • Ran Smitrem
  • Ewido Scan - Failed - Machine shutsdown
  • Ad-Aware Scan - Ditto
  • Spybot scan - Ditto
  • McAfee scan - Ditto

Welcome back th3,

Please download the FxSasser.exe file from: http://securityrespo...er/FxSasser.exe. You may need to use another computer to do this. If so, use a disk or other portable device to transfer the file to the infected computer.

Disconnect the computer from the network/Internet connection. (Disconnect the cable if necessary.)

Restart the computer.

As soon as Windows opens and you see the Windows desktop, click Start > Run.
Type: cmd

and press Enter.

Type: shutdown -i

and press Enter.

In the Remote Shutdown Dialog that opens, do the following:

Click Add, type your computer name into the Add Computers dialog box, and then click OK.
In the "Display warning for" field, type 9999.
Type the following text in the Comment box: Delay Lsass.exe shutdown

Click OK.

Close all the running programs before running the tool.

Turn off System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click the FxSasser.exe file to start the removal tool.

Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.

When the tool has finished running, you will see a message indicating whether W32.Sasser infected the computer. In the case of a removal of the worm, the program displays the following results:
Total number of scanned files
Number of deleted files
Number of repaired files
Number of terminated viral processes
Number of fixed registry entries

Please post these results here.

Restart the computer.

Run the removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.

Turn ON System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reconnect the network/Internet connection.

Post the results from the scan here along with a new HijackThis log.

Not a huge degree of success :tazz:

Firstly the shutdown -i command is not doable, simply not enough time to get it done! Shutdown -a works though.

Using that method I was able to run in safe mode but nothing found.

In normal modeFxSasser will not run - says user account does not have admin privileges even though it does!

Also I have just noticed in normal mode that the 'Turn Off Computer' option on the start menu is missing.......

I know Sasser is there - or think I do because of the usual shutdown box - but there must be something else going on too.

:)

Let's try to clean the rest of your computer before we move on. You have several worms infecting your computer.

You will want to print these instructions for easy reference.

Please boot into safe mode.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.client...fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.client...arch.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://uk.red.client...arch.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.client...fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.client...arch.yahoo.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.zpecialof...om/indexie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.client...arch.yahoo.com/
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Updates] wkssvr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Restore] scrgrd.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Win32 Configuration] videosd32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Msn Messengers] msnmsgr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Msn Messengers] msnmsgr.exe
O4 - Global Startup: updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\wupdater.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

You will need to click Start Menu > Search to find these files and delete them.

wkssvr.exe
scrgrd.exe
videosd32.exe
wupdater.exe

msnmsgr.exe<-----Do not delete the legit msnmsgr.exe. Right click msnmsgr.exe and select properties and check to see if it is from Microsoft.

After that, Reboot.

Please post a new HJT log.

MasterJ,

Limited success :)

These 04 entries were not present

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Updates] wkssvr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Restore] scrgrd.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Win32 Configuration] videosd32.exe
O4 - Global Startup: updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\wupdater.exe

And in win explorer I cannot find any of these files

wkssvr.exe
scrgrd.exe
videosd32.exe
wupdater.exe

Although I note that they are no longer present in the HJT log.

MsnMessenger files that I found appeared to be genuine.

Some observations re running of the machine:
  • I have disabled a lot of startup items to help with stopping the 'shutdown' process
  • Win Explorer works fine in safe mode but in user mode the 'file companion' sidebar (where you enter the search parameters)
  • Machine is still prone to random shutdowns - those where the machine just powers down no warning
  • 'Sasser' shutdown is random too but can always be triggered by attaching a device (eg. flash drive) or opening the CD tray. Some other processes also trigger the 'Sasser' screen
  • Windows Explorer is aslo prone to random crashes
  • Opening Internet Explorer also causes the machine to crash, sometime with the 'Sasser' screen
What next?

Thanks for your time and patience.

Tony

You said you disabled some startup items. Please re-enable ALL startup items and then post a new log. I need to see everything that's going on.

Please note this is in safe mode - In normal mode I cannot view the user desktop or tools bar or start menu etc. Cont/Alt/Del will bring up task manager however so something is hiding the settings.

This was happening prior to re-enabling all the startup entries and started after the last random shutdown.

Firstly I hope you are OK, in your absense I have been working hard via the forum archives and logs to get this sorted out. I know that's poor form but my friend needs the laptop back asap and I had permission to re-format if all else failed.

Ok well I have made quite a lot of progress today:
  • Machine now starts in normal mode :tazz:
  • I have managed to run Ad-Aware, Spybot and Ewido scans
  • New HJT log and Ewido results below
Sasser was the least of my problems as it turns out but was the first visable indication there was a problem. Machine also had several worms and some P2PNetworks viruses.

Spybot has removed the following:

CoolWebSearch.allcybersearch, LSA, Smitfraud-C, Hellz Little Spy, BroadcastPC
MyWay.MyBar, Hotbar, Twaintech, WindowsSecurityCentre.AVOverride, WindowsSecurityCentre.FirewallDisableNotify & WindowsSecurityCentre.AVDisableNotify

Would you mind checking the logs and seeing if you can find anything else?

Many thanks,

Tony

::Report End

I have all the HJT backups etc so we could always put it back to how it was or just reformat the blasted thing anyhow :)

The only part I haven't checked yet is Internet since it's wireless and I don't have the right hardware.....

Thanks again,

Tony

Something still not quite right...

A full AV Scan still causes a total crash :tazz:

Firstly I hope you are OK, in your absense I have been working hard via the forum archives and logs to get this sorted out. I know that's poor form but my friend needs the laptop back asap and I had permission to re-format if all else failed.

That's not poor form at all. We actually encourage users to try to figure out problems on their own.

Download CWShredder Here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Download smitRem.exe ©noahdfear, and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop (in Internet Explorer, right click on Panda ActiveScan link select "Copy Shortcut" then right click on your desktop and select "Paste Shortcut" or in FireFox right-click the link and select "Save Link As" and save it to your desktop).

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, and the contents of smitfiles.txt by using Add Reply.

Besides the AV crashing, are there any other issues that you are having?

CLEAN! :)

I also have crashes during any scans again - Ewido, Spybot, Ad-Aware, AVG (McAfee un-installed). No I/Net access so cannot run PandaScan

It's as if there is something there that know's it's being hunted down and just forces an instant power down.

CWS clear BTW.

For info these are the scans/fixes I have run so far:
  • SmitRem
  • FxSasser
  • CWShredder
  • ATF Cleaner
  • Ad-Aware - Have managed 2 full clean scans but still subsequently crashes
  • LSP Fix
  • Spybot - Have managed 1 full clean scan but still subsequently crashes
  • Ewido - Have managed 1 full clean scan but still subsequently crashes
  • BFU - Alcan and P2P scripts
I have also tried 'sfc /scannow' but this crashes too :tazz:

What I have resolved is that 'Sasser' shut down is gone, using CD/DVD no longer prompts shutdown nor does plugging in a flash drive.

Does anybody know of a virus that can cause these crashes as soon as a scan gets close to it?

Once again many thanks for your time.

What do you mean that you can't access the internet? Are you getting an error? Did this happen after downloading smitrem and cwshredder?

Sorry MasterJ,

What I meant be no I/Net access was that I had no wireless here at home but I hadn't thought to connect up wired.

This post is from the infected machine.

PandaScan below.
